Cheers for the advice Moggy, will peruse that list. Was going for a bit of local knowledge about avoiding tourist traps.

Sorry to Scottish respondents if I wasn't clear, I meant chips as in "fish and", not "on your shoulder..." ;)

On the subject of Glasgow, was talking to my dentist (who is originally from Glasgow) earlier today and somehow the conversation got onto my irrational fear of false teeth and she said there used to be a market stall in Glasgow that sold second hand dentures and people would actually buy and reuse them :dread: I suspect she was being serious too.

This is absolutely true, as far as I know - most likely in Paddy's Market or the Barras.

I'm on the way to Edinburgh on holiday right now and have a couple of days with not much going on.

Can anybody recommend anything to check out while I'm there?

Already doing the obvious stuff (Zoo, Castle etc)

Best thing you could do is jump on the train to Glasgow. :datass:

Seriously though depending on how long you're up there Glasgow is only 40-50 minutes on the train and gives you even more to do so I'd consider popping through for the day at least.

Beyond the obvious stuff in Edinburgh I've heard Dynamic Earth is worth a visit, though I've never been myself.

Camera Obscura and a tour of the Vaults. The dungeon is pretty fun too. Arthur’s Seat as well if the weather is nice.

There’s loads of places in Edinburgh that do deep fried mars bars, dunno how yous have all missed them. Never had one like cos strawberry float that, get a deep fried pizza they’re well good.

The best place on that list Moggy posted is the Cafe Piccante. The Royal Mile places are for tourists, the Gullane place is probably lovely but it’s in Gullane and I’ve never liked the Deep Sea.
Mars bars need to be fried to order, so expect to wait a while, especially if there’s a lot of you.

If you’ve never had a proper Edinburgh saultunsawss fish supper it might be worth trying that instead ( I know exactly one person who managed to finish a deep fried mars bar; they are really sickly).

Forgot about this thread - was staying at the Britannia Hotel near the Arthur Conan Doyle Hall. Was all a bit rushed on the afternoon in question but found a place that did deep fried chocolate. They wouldn't fry outside stuff so just made him a cock out of a Mars bar and a couple of garlic mushrooms held together with a paperclip. He liked it (and finished it) :dread:

The geezer in the shop had literally no clue what I was asking him for until I'd finished my sculpture, then the penny dropped

Thanks for the help, I do appreciate the serious foodie answers even if it's clear now I was after something far less cultured...
