EGM Announces March Return For Magazine
by Chris Remo | December 21, 2009

In the latest of a string of announcements by EGM Media LLC, the magazine publisher said print publication Electronic Gaming Monthly will return to U.S. news-stands with the March 2010 issue.

EGM Media, headed up by original Electronic Gaming Monthly founder Steve Harris, also revealed a distribution deal that will reunite the magazine with Time Warner Retail, which handled newsstand sales and marketing for EGM when it was run by publisher Ziff-Davis Media.

Harris acquired the magazine's rights in May of last year, four months after Ziff published its last issue. At the time, Harris planned to relaunch EGM in late 2009, and a teaser image suggested a December 2009 inaugural issue -- but today's news is the first definitive statement about a start date for the resurrected magazine.

In recent weeks, EGM Media has announced that former EGM editors Dan Hsu, Demian Linn, and Sean "Seanbaby" Reiley will again be contributing to the magazine, along with returning ad sales director Jeffrey Eisenberg and former 1UP video producers Ryan O'Donnell and Matt Chandronait.

In addition to its print component, the new incarnation of the magazine includes an online publication called EGM[i]: The Digital Magazine, accessible via a special code included in each newsstand copy.

"With our new weekly digital format, and the premium enhancement that newsstand purchasers will receive, we're changing the value proposition in a new and meaningful way," Harris said in a statement. "Not only does the digital companion allow us to offer additional content that is complementary to the print magazine, but it also gives us a way to communicate with our readers and update the print product in an ongoing manner."

Dunno if this has been reported here at all, but I thought I'd post it in case anyone else had missed it. Probably won't mean much to most readers here, but anyone who was familiar with the old EGM will remember the upset the closure of the magazine caused. It will be interesting to see if the relaunch can work and how many of the original crew get back on board.

These are very, very tough times for print - especially game-related print. Gotta admire Harris's courage.

RE the online magazine thing: they should consider an EGM magazine app, or something similar.

Shoe and Matt mentioned on Rebel FM that EGM was still making a healthy profit when it closed, it was just Ziff Davis' crippling dept that brought it down. I hope it works out for them cos there's some great guys behind it.

They were talking about doing a subscriber only thing, the quality and size of Edge and GamesTM. I think they should have gone with that. The US news stand business means they have to keep it pathetically thin.

I'm a fan of the the personalities previously involved in EGM, though the podcasts, but couldn't believe how lame EGM was when I saw an issue in Borders once.
