They have laid off an unspecified number of staff at Eidos Montreal (whom Embracer bought from Square Enix very recently) but with this Deus Ex which was in dev has now been cancelled.

The Swedish gaming company Embracer Group AB is canceling a video game in the beloved Deus Ex series after two years of development and will lay off a number of employees as part of an ongoing initiative to cut costs, according to people familiar with the moves.

Eidos, the Montreal, Canada-based studio behind the game, will instead focus on an original franchise. The canceled Deus Ex project, which had not yet been announced, was slated to enter production later this year, said the people, speaking anonymously because they are not authorized to talk to the press.

Well, since that makes you my new boss, take a long look at Manderley's dead body. Consider that my resignation; I don't have time to write a letter.

Has any gaming company ever managed to throw away so much goodwill so quickly?

Gutted. The recent deus ex games were superb. Although mankind divided was clearly rushed and cut short, what was there was brilliantly designed and played great. The fact they have thrown away 2 years of development is shocking.

1. Aquire as many studios and IPs as possible as quickly as possible
2. Pump share price
3. Don't do anything with IP and close studios
4. ....
5. Profit!

Semi related but Steam have the Deus Ex collection for £7.47 right now

Are they worth playing still?

Invisible War is a rough game to play, almost more so now than it was at the time, but there's still some interesting stuff in there if you can overlook some of the really big compromises it made!

The original remains peerless, even if the impact of it is somewhat lessened by two decades of games pulling from it.

The Eidos Montreal games are great examples of how to update a franchise without losing too much of the core magic. Never quite manage to recapture the glory of the OG but they both bring something unique and interesting to the mix of their own

Have you tried it yet? I loaded it up on Steam Deck and the controls seemed a bit janky? I couldn’t get the doors to open in the beginning  it’s probably more me than the game being wrong tho

I spent a chunk of yesterday evening doing the tutorial. Like you I found the controls all over the place to begin with, but I managed to download a user layout from another player that had like 10,000 likes or something and that's worked a treat. Still had to bind some keys like using the scope and the flashlight but now it's good to go :toot:

Ashamed to say that I've started Deus Ex three times and never finished it, for one reason or another. It's a life goal to change that at some point as it really is an incredible game.

HR and MD are both pretty brilliant as well. MD had such an atmosphere, Prague was a joy to explore.
