I'm fairly certain a few people on here have lived in the states before and I'm just looking for some advice.

I am hoping to move out to the states or possibly Canada in the next 2/3 years. The big uncertainty for me is work, I have no idea how well my skills will transfer and this is the thing I most need help with. Is it worth writing to people in my industry, universities, etc for some advice?

Any help would be appreciated.

To which 'skills' do you refer? Do you have a degree? In which subject?

He's an expert in JCVD and knows the script for Kickboxer off by heart.

As well as this I workin Electrical Engineering for the electricity supply industry. The standard qualification for an engineer in the supply industry is an HNC as most people do an apprenticeship.

Sounds like the best place to look for work would be in Alberta, as they're currently in a boom economy due to the expansion of the oil sands.

I'm working towards acquiring the CCNA ICT qualification next summer and want to move out to the states for a while to be with my girlfriend. CCNA is an internationally recognised networking qualification so employers there will be looking for it... but how in the hell am I going to get the chance to work there when that's about the only qualification I have (working on driving too though)? Getting a work permit visa or anything like that entails a trip to the nearest US Embassy for an interview with the Consular Officer. :?

That would be by far the easiest thing to do but marriage next summer would be ridiculous; rushing into that isn't our idea of a good idea.

Now I'm not sure about your qualification but electrical engineers are generally in pretty high demand worldwide as I understand it.

Perhaps there is some sort of equivalency test you can take to acquire a US qualification?

CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) is an internationally recognised and taught qualification, and many employers apparently look for it when looking for new network engineers. As far as I know I could in theory get a job from here to Tokyo to Cancun with it.

I may be way off here but I would imagine jobs are fairly hard to come by in the US right now given the rather large number of unemployed people scrambling for whatever jobs do exist. I'm not trying to put you off as living in another country for a time will be great and let you see how others see the world but I'm just pointing out a stumbling block at this time.

Doubt it. The one you'll want is the CCNP. The CCNA is the entry level Cisco qualification.

£3,880?

strawberry floating hell.

BTW, it's not down the drain. And you should be able to find work on the back of it. So good luck, also, despite it being entry-level, it's supposed to be strawberry floating hard.

Even that's really strawberry floatin' complicated. Slightly easier to get sponsorship than marriage (you need to be sponsored by your girlfriend and she needs to be earning a set amount, anyway) but all in...it's a nightmare. So much red tape.
