PostEmilythestrange tries to make a game
by emilythestrange » Tue Dec 01, 2009 6:01 pm

Hello everyone!

I feel silly spamming up the iPhone thread, I thought it'd be better to just make my own topic hidden away in here.

Myself and a group of students from Teesside university have been making games for the iPhone and iPod Touch. After what is fair to say a failed release for Future Racer (which was removed from the App store after about an hour due to technical issues), we're finally back on the store with Picnic Panic.

I'd like to use this topic for feedback. Picnic Panic is only 59p if you fancy a go, and I'd love to hear what you all think!

I picked this up earlier, so I'll be back to give my impressions at some point! Good work, Emily. It's nice to see someone make it in the business. :D

What? I don't remember this, I'm sorry

Future Racer was a mess, the re-release will have some new features, like steering and a pause button :fp:

 I hope this version will be less crap. The kind of feedback we got was that the whole game was poor, but the music was good. We didn't do the music.

Triptik provided the music, their web site appears to be under construction for now.

Also, as of today Picnic Panic just moved past Curious George to be the 50th top selling paid app in the kid's genre, YES

Bloodstream Raiders went on the store on the 4th, here's a link.

This game was made for a client, so although we made adaptations the game was designed to fit a brief. You simply control a single white blood cell moving through the bloodstream, destroying harmful virus cells by firing antibodies.

We got a very kind review of Bloodstream Raiders from a Russian web site today, they scored the game an 8, identifying (as far as I can crudely tell from Google Translate) the graphics as the poorest aspect. If anyone can do Russian better than Google I would really appreciate some help with what this says!

Personally, I think it's awesome that we have somone here just starting out in the industry. It's great to have fresh blood (no pun intended). Yes, you may not get great reviews for your first couple of games, but that's how you learn.

I have NO idea what's going on in that screenshot. That surely can't be good for sales.

I see your point! Does this help?

There is food in the middle, and you have to defend it for as long as possible from incoming bugs by prodding them.
We're working on an update to include multi-touch (so you can splat multiple bugs at the same time), and adjustments will be made to the wasp so it's more obvious when you can attack it. This was based on review feedback, but also baring in mind we don't have much time left before Christmas when we'd all very much like to go home! The game is small and ideally it'd be great to make the game bigger with more levels, more bugs and more challenges, but we just can't squeeze it in.

Lately we've been working on Woolly the Jumper: A Sheep on the Edge, it's in submission with Apple and I really hope they can approve it in time for Christmas. Here's one of the first screenshots (it's already a little out of date, as art tweaks were still being made right up till submission). This one will also be 59p.

For 59p, you can't really argue. Rest assured that once I get an iPhone (it is one of things I am working towards), I will download your games.

Heh, your worry isn't me - or even the people on this forum. It's people browsing the game on the app-store and deciding whether to buy or not based on that screenshot.

The new pic is a huge improvement, though.

It looks like a cross between Mario Bros 2 and Yoshi's Island.

But don't worry, I still won't buy it cause I'll never buy an iPhone.

Don't think I'll ever buy an iPhone either, but I'd like an iPod Touch so I can try the games. So far I've only tried a few others (which is silly as ideally I'd play as many as possible to make comparisons). Minigore was awesome.

I'm still not used to reading reviews of games I've worked on, I'm adjusted to reading reviews for games I'm playing, or even writing reviews of my own, but I've added some to the first post.

Woolly the Jumper: A Sheep on the Edge has arrived in time for Christmas! This one is also just 59p. We even have a slippery, icy Winter level that's pretty hard.
