Following the recent announcement that Microsoft-owned Age Of Empires creator Ensemble Studios would close after the completion of Halo Wars, Gamasutra has discovered that a now-canceled Halo MMO was in development at the studio, unearthing prototype UI and level screenshots of the Ensemble-developed project.

The prototype art, which was at one point made available on an Ensemble-linked online artist portfolio website, further confirms previous rumors that the studio was working on an MMO based on the Bungie-created sci-fi franchise.

There isn't a facepalm big enough for what i am feeling!

I think they stopped when they realised that any half decent Wizard could kick Master Chiefs arse.

Can't be real, there may be/have been a Halo MMO in the works, but that ain't it.

I can't think of anything more dull than a Halo MMO. It'd remove all the franchise's strengths and would increase focus on its weak points. Terrible idea.

A Barbie MMO might be more dull than a Halo MMO as it would involve endless hours of shoe shopping and going to the hair dressers.

I said "World of Halo" as a joke back in some other thread. It would be just too uncanny if there was really an MMO like that.

These screens are all mockups, meaning they were made to showcase what certain aspects of the game may have looked like (in the examples above, spell effects). It looks like they've used some WoW backgrounds yes, but that's no reason to dismiss them as fake straight off, they were obviously never intended for release after all.

But yes, it does look gooseberry fool
