From tomorrow customers who take both gas and electricity from E.On will see their annual bills rise by by £227 to a total of £1226.

The company, which has 5.5 million UK customers, blamed soaring wholesale gas costs for its decision to raise gas and electricity bills.

Managing director Graham Bartlett said: "I'm very aware of the effect that today's announcement will have on our customers and I recognise that this is a very tough time for everyone."

"This was not an easy decision to make and we've tried to keep these increases as low as possible while protecting as many of our customers as we can."

E.On said around 1.4 million of its customers on price protection and fixed tariff products would be unaffected by the higher bills.

The move comes a day after wholesale gas prices jumped more than 14% when a leak on a North Sea pipeline prompted fears about supplies this winter.

Norway's gas producer Statoil Hydro said it discovered the leak on a pipeline linking its Kvitebjoern field to an onshore processing plant. The pipeline could remain shut until next spring.

The E.On rise follows British Gas's announcement of a 35% rise for gas bills last month, and 9% for electricity. EDF bills rised by up to 22%.

The UK is highly exposed to gas supply disruptions because it lacks gas storage compared with its European neighbours.

Historically, the UK has benefited from lower gas prices during the summer due to domestic overproduction and easily available imports.

But with hydrocarbons such as gas and oil now viewed as a scarce resource, there has been more intense competition for supplies from the continent.

clicky

Obviously not as big a increase as BG, but where does this leave all the people to who moved to E.On after BG increased their prices last month.

In the long run, wouldn't it just be cheaper to get a little wind turbine and/or some solar panels, so you don't need to rely on those big companies for all your electricity?

Everything is going up in price, everything. I filled my car up with petrol on Monday and it cost me £58 ! Two years ago I was paying no-where near that amount.

Society has still yet to fully wake up to how much of an impact oil has on our lives. We splurged for years and now this resource is running we have no backup plan.

Serious money needs to be invested into alternatives and perhaps rising prices for the consumer will be enough to put pressure on the government to take action.

Anyone who wasn't an idiot made sure they took up the fixed price offer, which this news doesn't affect.

Just moved to a new flat which is with E.On. Used to be with N-Power who are a bunch of useless Twats. Had well overpaid on my account due to the previous tenants giving dodgy meter readings but N-Power still havn't refunded me. In fact they keep sending me reminders that I owe them money even though they have confirmed over the phone my account is in credit.

Guess it doesn't matter who you are with as they are all going to put the prices. Not much we can do except bend over and take it.

Hope who ever lived in the flat before me had the sense to get the prices capped as I might have missed out.

I switched to BG 4 weeks ago on their 2011 fixed priced deal, it actually turned out cheaper than Eon. It all depends on when you use your gas/elec and how much. I ended up with 2 huge spreadsheets detailing the wattage used over winter/autumn, spring/summer and lots of calculations to find out that BG would be cheaper for us than the old Eon fixed priced deal by £25.

Not an awful lot but the savings get better when prices go up.

Because it costs about 2 to 5 year's worth of gas if not more to install them and you can't necessarily live off only solar panels. People use too much electricity for that. It's like a 10 year investment to save any money that unfortunately no-one is really prepared to do regardless of foresight. I think they also require planning permission.
