Ouch that is pricey.

I'm at butlins this week so generally the beer is pretty bad. Found two of their bars however stock Founders All Day IPA which is an epic beer from an awesome brewery.

Going to only be going to these bars for the rest if the trip I think :D

BrewDog: Abstrakt AB:18 – 11.8%

Image

Price: £10 a Bottle

Style: Barrel Aged Imperial Brown Ale

Location: My Sofa

This is not a beer for the feint hearted. At 11.8% it packs a whopping punch. It is made by BrewDog as part of the Abstrakt range, they make only a 4 beers a year each one is a single run, in that case of this one there were 12100 bottles made.

This edition of the Abstrakt series started its life as an imperial brown ale, it was put into rum casks along with Scottish tayberries and purple raspberries for two years.

The resulting beer is brilliant. There is a strong alcohol smell and taste but that is balanced well with the fruit flavours and the smoothness that is there from being aged. There is a nice oaky warmth that comes in too from the rum barrel.

On your first sip the high alcohol level hits you, especially if you chill it a little too much, but that quickly gives way a berry and fruit flavour as well as the warmth from the rum casks.

There is a very slight hint of coffee and chocolate but very very slight, most of the flavours are the raspberry notes in there.

It is a brilliant beer, this bottle I have had in the cupboard for 6 months and it has certainly improved over that time. The flavours are much more rounded and the slight harshness that was in there has mellowed out. I have one more bottle but am unsure when I will drink it as it is the last bottle I have and as it is a single run only beer I am unlikely to come across it again.

Good Points

Fruit flavours give a sweetness to offset the alcohol volume
Deep and full flavour gives a real luxurious experience
Rare, so has a certain spectacle to it
Good development in taste as it warms

Bad Points

Rare so finding a time to drink it is hard as you wont see it again
Very easy to over chill it
The cork is a pain to get out

Rating: 4.25 of 5

Rich flavour, great fruit notes. Very special beer.

Do it, Tokyo* is fantastic!

Once you have had it try Black Tokyo Horizon

http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/brewdog--n ... on/137813/

It is brilliant, it is a collab between 3 breweries and as the beer warms you get 3 distinct flavours, very clever.

I bought that can of Crest (10%), it was only £1.30

Yet to drink it though, but one that must be drunk in small doses.

Currently got a Saison from an Italian Craft brewer called BrewFist on the go, holy hell it is good!

It is nice an lemony and slightly sour but with the spice in there is the Saison, I wish I had known sooner Italians could make awesome beer!

The Kernel India Pale Ale Black - 6.8%. 4.5/5

This is a damn nice beer. Currently drinking it now. Even pouring it I knew it was going to be delicious. Beautiful dark colour, with a kind of melted marshmallow brownie head.
Quite a strong one, but the flavours are all balanced nicely. I actually prefer the stronger beers when it has these kind of hops (Simcoe, Centennial, Columbus). I always seem to prefer beers with Columbus hops.

Anyway, has the usual characteristics of a nice "new world" IPA, but a bit more mature and sexy. Would certainly buy again. Even my burps are tasty.

The Kernel yet again not letting me down. Easily my favourite London brewer. I'm gonna stock up on about a hundred bottles before I move to Italy (although I know they make nice stuff there too!)

Went to the Southampton Arms in Kentish Town on Saturday a real ale and cider pub which is pretty small but very good on the couple of times I've been, also good prices for London (£3.40 ish a pint)

Had the Solstice from Dark Star and Snowdonia Ale from Purple Moose Brewery.

I preferred the Snowdonia Ale as it was a bit more refreshing to drink in the Saturday afternoon sun, but both were good.

(As you can see i'm not that great at describing ales in terms of hoppy/zesty etc etc. Would be great to a proper tasting session so I could understand it all a bit more, anyone know where that can be done?)

Brew Dog in Camden and Craft Beer Co. near Covernt Garden do taster session / beer club things from time to time. Might be worth going to one of those, also Brew By Number and Kernel do food/beer matching evenings too at their breweries in Bermondsy.

Ah nice, Camden and Bermondsey and both quite handy for me!

I assume these are paid for things? Do you know how much they are? I do enjoy craft beers and ales, but i'm just quite bad at describing them which then makes saying what my preference is quite difficult is

Downlands: Root Thirteen – 3.6%

Price: £3.50

Style: English Pale Ale

Location: The Snowdrop Inn, Lewes

This one wasn’t a bad beer as such, it just wasn’t epic.

In Lewes there is a pub called the Snowdrop, it is a lovely place with interesting décor, brilliant food and most of all an ever changing range of beers.

I hadn’t had any beers from Downlands before so thought why not, lets go for that one.

It is all right, nothing overly special but what it is what you expect from a 3.6% English pale ale, there is a nice feel as you drink it, there are no harsh spike of flavour in there just a very mellow easy drinking beer.

There are some nice citrus and grapefruit flavours in there which is nice, a clean crispness which works really well in hot weather.

Personally I would have like it to be pushed a bit to maybe 4.3% and have some more hopping in there to give a punch of bitter and hop but that’s just me I like a punchy beer.

If you want a beer that you can go to a pub on a Sunday, chat with your mates while eating some peanuts and then wander home after a couple in a straight line this is the beer for you.

As I say it is a very happy flavoured beer, nice fruit notes in there a little caramel and toffee but not all that much. For me it is a little dull and “normal” but it was very pleasant and as most of the other beers on the bar I have had in the past it made for a decent pick.

Good Points

Low alcohol volume
Refreshing
Clean Taste

Bad Points

A bit dull
Slightly too low alcohol volume
Pricey (but that is more the pub than the beer)
Rating: 2.75 of 5

Not a bad beer at all, good for a Sunday lunch time pint but not overly interesting or exciting.

I am back in London for a month and want to visit Olympic Park so might go there as it's by Hackney Wick station. No idea about prices yet though but am open to treat myself.
