Brewfist / ToØl: Space Frontier – 6.5%

Image

Price: £3.50 a bottle

Style: IPA

Location: My Sofa

This is my second beer I have ever had from Brewfist and I am glad I have tried more, it is I think one of the best IPA’s I have ever had.

This is a collaboration between Brewfist and ToØl, and it has come out a treat. I love ToØl, they do some great stuff and when I was trying to decide if I should grab the Brewfist beers I did the fact they had collaborated with ToØl gave me good confidence that this would work out well. They have also done a collaboration with Prairie which is in my cupboard and I am very excited to try!

Anyway, back to this beer, it has a beautiful smell to it, sweet but bitter with some lemon and orange in there, it has that smell that makes you know it is going to be a great beer, a single wiff and your mouth fills with saliva.

Taste wise it has a great fruit flavour coming though, big hits of grapefruit and tangerine and mango as well as citrus. During the brewing process grape must is added which really boosts the fruity notes. There is a nice bitterness but not a huge punch of it the hit of flavour here is from the fruit and citrus coming from the hopping.

This beer doesn’t come out too fizzy which is good, if there was more fizz I think the flavours would clash and begin to taste odd. I imagine a keg version of this would be stunning.

Like with the Low-Gravity Saison I had the other day this really brings up memories of Italy for me, I would love to be sat in a square somewhere enjoying one of these with a pizza.

Good Points

Very light and refreshing
Nice bitterness that doesn’t overpower the fruit notes
Interesting mix of fruit flavours because of the use of grape must

Bad Points

Flavours may be a bit much for someone not used to big flavoured IPA’s
Rating: 4.5 of 5

Bright, flavoursome, fun, get some.

Got a nice batch of stuff from Kernel and BBNo breweries last weekend. Had a oak aged sour which was tasty but not my preferred taste. The BBNo Chinook and Simcoe IPA was delicious though.

A specific visit? If not get there before 12.30 or else it's utterly rammed. Good food nearby too in Druid St or Maltby.

Currently sipping on The Kernel India Pale Ale Equinox - 7.1%

Another delicious IPA from The Kernel. Quite a strong one, but the taste doesn't suggest it. Just smooth, citrus/graprefruit vibes. Could happily drink a few of these, although it is rather strong.

4/5

I have beer club with some mates tonight. Normally it is only 3 of us but we have 5 members tonight.

We are all bringing 2 beers each (5 bottles of each), and the host has to cook dinner too.

These are my choices:

Anyone heard of/used Flavourly craft beer club? They select a bunch of beers and send them in 48 hrs.

I got a £12 off voucher from ebuyer. Usually it's £20 + £4 so £12 for 8 isn't too bad.

However...you have to put your details in first. You can cancel any time but I'm always a bit...."hmmm" when these kind of offers as I can imagine them taking my money out every month anyway.

I've heard of them but never used them and don't know any one who has, I know a few people that use Beer52 and BeerHawk.co.uk for their beer clubs.

Personally I would rather pick my own that sub to a beer club but I guess it is down to know more of what is out there so know what to look for more. Maybe I should start making a beer list in here each month with links to where they can be bought as a GR Club sort of thing.

Oh yeah me too. Only reason I'd use it is for the £12 off as it ends up as £1.50 a beer as opposed to £3+

Had some PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon) at Draft House Hammersmith - Pretty much America's answer to Carling/Carlsberg.

In other words - bland.

Went to the Italian beer festival EURHOP in Rome on Saturday. Was great fun. 10 euros got you entry, a glass and a wallet for the glass and 3 tokens (a token = 1 euro, and drinks were 2 - 4 euros). Basically you tie the wallet round your neck, plop your glass in then hand over the glass to the brewers.

There was about 50 brewers there with their own section, and well over 300 or so different beers. Most were Italian craft breweries but they had USA, other European places, and one from London (Orbit). I stuck to the Italian beers.

They seem to like their sours here, so I tried a couple of them. Had Brewfist Spaceman which was lovely. Birra del Borgo seasonal ale which was tasty. A strange India Pale Lager which had a really creamy taste. A couple of Blanches and Wit and a Smoked Orange IPA. Most were tasty but one was a bit too sour. My gf and a couple of others came along. She doesn't like beer at all but tried a couple. Which meant I got to finish her ones too :)

Yeah I hadn't had them before but saw you liked space frontier so gave them a try.

They don't sell it here from what I've seen though. Mostly lazio region beers. Even in the huge Eataly with loads of beers. Gonna try some other shops though. Birra Del Borgo are good. I had a ReAle extra that reminded me of Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

I love 'proper' beer but I'm not at all a fan of this ultra strong stuff many of you seem to be into.... Prefer IPAs and Blonde beers myself. One I've found recently is 'East Coast IPA' which I picked up from Morrisons in their 4 for £6 range. This is being marketed as a craft beer even though it's actually brewed by that 'small and independent' brewery that is Greene King. The description on the bottle is pretty accurate though: - "...fuses the punchy citrus aroma of American hops with the easy-drinking refreshment of classic British pale ales". Very quaffable indeed!
