What you drinking? The beer and booze thread

There has been a bit of over reliance on american hops but it is changing, there is more New Zealand and Australian stuff creeping in now. I guess because the craft beer revolution started in America it makes sense their hops would feature most.

Foreign export is far, far too sweet. Yuk! If you find Original dull then your taste buds just aren't very subtle! A drink to slowly savour. (The only people I used to know who drank Export regulalrly were Nigerians who seemed to love the stuff.) (Oh and my partners daughter will insist on drinking the 'draught' beer in cans - that's revolting too.)

Edit: Errkal - you do seem to like things that to me are just far too strong and strident - the Brewhouse beers for example. Things like Punk IPA are just one step before Carlsberg Special Brew to me. Its a bit like me and with whiskies - I used to only like the full 'in your face' Islays but now I've come to much prefer and appreciate the more subtle Speysides - taken a few years though.

I like to have strong flavours in beers, I don't see the point in beers that are just sort of there like guiness, dommbar, most "real Ale" I like a beer to have a big something about it, whether it is the fruit and bitterness of a good double IPA or the massive coffr and chocolates of a well made stout.

I'm pretty picky with my beer but that's because I don't like to drink just to have a beer, each beer should be special and enjoyed.

Yeah, I think we have very opposite tastes! Fully agree though that beer should be special and enjoyed for flavour. There is as much variety in beer, if not more, than in wines. (I do like my wine too though!) Personally I don't enjoy the whole fruit, chocolate, flavourings thing going on - I like my beer to taste of hops! It's good real ale that I like - (don't like the dark, treacly beers though - again, for me, they tend to be all about strength over subtlety).

Agree about Doombar - Sharps beers are a case of very smart marketing over substance imo. I'll drink it, (if I must!), but I certainly wouldn't seek it out.

Sounds fair, yeah I just don't get how people can rave about doombar and alike it just tastes of nothing yet they way some people talk you think it is a blowjob in a glass!

Doombar is decent from a draught but a lot better from a bottle. In the same way some beers are supposed to be treated as special, Doombar is a cheap, incredibly easy and enjoyable drink to have when you fancy getting more than slightly tipsy. Would I choose it if I was drinking one beer with a meal? No. It's a fantastic 'volume' drink.

It isn't, it is flavorless. There is a very slight fruit flavour but it is so lifeless and depressing.

The idea of a "volume" beer doesn't sit right with me either, I don't see the point in drinking something pointless and boring just because it means I can keep drinking all night, I would rather game fewer beers but pace myself so I can really enjoy them and enjoy the flavour development a proper beer provides as it warms and as your taste buds adapt.

To be fair, Doom Bar does have quite a distinct taste of orange.

Was thinking yesterday that when we were in Cornwall a few years back I found that a much better brewery than Sharps was this one:-

Betty Stoggs in particular is lovely - very balanced. Sometime, on the very rare occasions we find ourselves in a Waitrose, treat myself to a couple of bottles.

Edit: also I think the expression is 'session beer' rather than 'volume beer'.

Off to a little beer fest tonight hopefully find a couple of nice local brews, the only downfall its in aldershot (such a lovely place)

I'm off to one in Dover next month, it is a really good fest, but Dover is such a crap place.

ooo good choice, I had it the other year at Dover Beer fest sortly after it won GBBF was a very good porter. Hopefully they have it again when I go in a few weeks

I had dark rum and ginger beer over Christmas. Loved it. Anybody prefer any specific brands/types when mixing those?

Where in London you going to be?

Mainly central but don't mind getting a tube to somewhere good if its a little way out. Me and my friends have down this quite a few times now just trying to find somewhere new.

A few minute walk from Covernt Garden there is a Craft Beer Co. that is really good,
Fleet Street there is Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese it is an odd place but really good and food is nice,
a bit further but at cannon street there is the pelt trader,
over by London Bridge next to Borough Market is The Rake,
by Trafalgar square there is the Harp.

I like Euston Tap purely because it's such a weird building. It's tiny but a very good selection.

Yeah there is good too, there is also the Cider tap opposite I keep meaning to go to.
