PostESPN shuts down its 3D channel due to minimal demand
by KK » Wed Jun 12, 2013 10:32 pm

Engadget wrote:A lack of interest in 3D viewing at home has claimed one of its first major victims today, as ESPN announced its 3D channel is going to shut down. ESPN 3D launched back in 2010 with coverage of the FIFA World Cup, but it will not make it to the next one, or to see ESPN's new Monday Night Football deal. In between it's broadcast everything from golf to the X Games to the NBA Finals, along with college football national championship games and and a one-off news spot on E:60. AT&T's U-verse dropped the channel in August 2011 after being one of the launch partners, but said it would come back due to a new agreement signed earlier this year. ESPN overcame many technology and cost hurdles to broadcasting 3D over the years, but in the end the chilly reception from the marketplace for 3D at home appears to have been too much to overcome. Another element that likely affected it were recent layoffs by parent company Disney, that Multichannel News reports included some jobs associated with ESPN 3D.

So what's next for ESPN? According to a statement, "committing our 3D resources to other products and services that will better serve fans and affiliates." That should include the 4K capabilities planned for its new facility in Bristol, but we'll have to wait until it opens next year to find out. For now ESPN says it will be ready to provide 3D content again "if or when" the viewing format takes off -- the release of another Avatar flick or TVs that don't need glasses for 3D might help -- now the question is if / when other early efforts like n3D and 3net could also be shelved.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/12/espn ... -adoption/

Not surprising considering recent figures from the US showed as few as 120,000 watching 3D channels at any one time

This whole thing has been a short lived fad really, hasn't it? Never taking off at home, never taking off in the pub...and 3D film sales in the UK falling to 18% (it was 27.5% in 2010 according to Rentrak EDI). It no doubt doesn't help it costs more to see a 3D film.

Plus it's generally shite.

You never feel "imeresed" in the actions - and it's normally blurry for a few seconds of "whoa that spear's coming RIGHT at me"

But yeah - I don't know a single person excited by 3D (movies or TV), not even the mates I know who spend so much money on the latest gadgetery.

Arranging trip to the cinema with friends? First question anyone says is "It's not 3D is it?" (or "Is there a 2D showing instead?")

I thought the problem with 3D and sport is that 3D requires a close up full body shot to show it popping out from the background, sport you need to see a zoomed out decent portion of the pitch, etc, so you know what's going on in the game/match. They just don't go together.

Wimbledon final in 3D was such a let-down. Not because the 3D didn't work but because like the above post says the view it was shot from just felt wrong. I don't mind the odd baseline camera angle view but to watch the whole match from there? Pfft. No thanks.

My personal biggest issue with 3D is the fact I went for active shutter 3D. The glasses are too heavy/boxy and the while I can't see the flicker of the glasses my eyeballs end up getting achy because of it.

You tend to get the 'B Team' on commentary too. Well, you do on football and darts on Sky.

Oh yeah, that's definitely one of the drawbacks. What's up with that anyway? Why can't the main commentator and co-commentator cover both types of broadcast?
The cost doesn't help either. I mean, how much do you have to pay to be eligible for Sky 3D? £80 a month? Talk about sending it out to fail.

These use a different feed for 3D which will have different replays apparently

Never seen a 3D film at the cinema. Never watched anything on a 3D TV. 90% of the time I play my 3DS with the 3D slider turned all the way down.

strawberry float 3D. Bunch of nonsense.

Yeah man. strawberry floating 3 dimensions.

The world would be a better place if it were just 2D

I have a 3dtv and I've only ever used the 3d to watch a few films.
I got The Hobit in 3d and it really works well but for 99.9% of programs I'm really not bothered.

The only thing doing 3d well is the 3DS. Everything else is rubbish.

 The cross-talk, resolution and viewing angles make 3DS the worst 3D display of modern times. It's gooseberry fool.

I do like stereoscopy, though. Every TV and monitor in my house is 3D now. Most of the time it's only used as a novelty, which is why it's dying out. Doing stupid things like making things pop out of the screen or against the background should only be used sparingly, but everything seems to go for the "woooooooaaaahhh" effect that isn't there anymore.

Virgin Media have been a big let down with their 3D stuff, in that they don't have any 3D stuff. Their website actually has a 3D programming section that basically says "3D is a thing" and that's it.

I watched 3D films in the cinema 2/3 times a year and that's it. it's just not really much more than a novelty in the house or in the cinema.
