If you think Essex is bad, never step over into Kent, by god it's a hell of a lot worse. If not for all the farmers who can barely talk any English, but they have a massive Chav population over there.

I'm originally from Kent (born in Chatham)and I find this sentence offensive (not really. I'm not fussed about the Kent vs Essex thing anyway)

Well that post is a blast from the past.

I've still been here just lurking mostly

Say that again, I dare you.

I know she's from Essex but it's not a very strong accent compared to a lot that I've heard. My wife's accent barely sounds Essex but she moved away when she was about 6 . Her sister on the other hand is 7 years older and moved back so has a very distinctive Essex accent .

Yeah, Riley is just the exception that proves the rule. Anyway, she's from way far out in Essex where I've not been before. I live in East London on the cusp of Essex so I see a lot of girls from there, and they're all the same.

Same applies to people from Yorkshire and the Geordies.

I feel that Steve, as proprietor of this reputable establishment, needs to clarify these comments.

This is an eight-year-overdue scandal in the making, here.

The accent you're talking about is East End of London, not Essex. It's spread out to Essex since around the 60s when families started moving out of London. You'll find it strongest in the towns on Londons border (Grays, Romford, Tilbury) and in the towns along the Thames river (Basildon, Pitsea). Same for Kent (Gravesend, Medway)

The accent becomes more neutral the further up from the river you get.

The original Essex accent is pretty much dead. I've only heard one person in my lifetime speaking it.

So the accent that everyone hears in Essex your saying can't be called an essex accent.Pretty sure the people from Essex will disagree.

I imagine most people who live in Essex, if they heard the traditional accent would think it was from Norfolk or from up north some place.

What exactly is seen as the Essex accent, cockney?

I'm asking this as someone who has lived in Essex most of my life and doesn't consider that they have an accent.

Yes?

I think what everyone here is talking about is the Cockney/East/North London mix there is now that you tend to hear on tv and is labelled as an Essex accent. Even true Cockney is a disappearing dialect
