I'm sure many of us have thought the same as you at some point. I know I have.

I hate to continue to derail the thread but that article doesn't back up what you say. I know everyone loves to laugh at me but I've studied this gooseberry fool endlessly. Superlative = highest degree of something. But what? The sleepiest, the coldest? etc. What he said made no sense as far as I'm concerned. I've only been doing it for a year of course so I might be wrong, but I'm certain that I'm not.

Sorry mate, but it does. It says "of outstanding quality, degree, etc.; supreme".

That's describing what a superlative is, not that the world itself means explicitly that.

This must be terribly exciting for everyone else reading.

I think we're just waiting for the penny to drop.

What? They were. Also works grammatically, if that's what you're laughing at.

No it doesn't, you can't use the word superlative as a superlative. It's like saying Italy were adjective instead of saying good or bad or something like that.

Anyway, time to verb my dinner.

As I said before, that's explaining what a superlative is. In no.1's case it's referring to absolute superlatives such as sublime, brilliant, incredible, amazing etc.

Denny popping in to be the flawless everyman. He's above baiting and name calling and ridiculous opinions. Apart from when he's not.

No problem. Glad to help - didn't realise you were such a big football fan. Get in a lot of debates with Dblock, though, eh? Some of them are even initiated by you!

Also, my name isn't "ginger" much like yours isn't "paedo miles".
