I hate to continue to derail the thread but that article doesn't back up what you say. I know everyone loves to laugh at me but I've studied this gooseberry fool endlessly. Superlative = highest degree of something. But what? The sleepiest, the coldest? etc. What he said made no sense as far as I'm concerned. I've only been doing it for a year of course so I might be wrong, but I'm certain that I'm not.

Sorry mate, but it does. It says "of outstanding quality, degree, etc.; supreme".

That's describing what a superlative is, not that the world itself means explicitly that.
