Yep, pretty poor all round. I'd say this and 2010 are the worst I've seen.

2002 was pretty poor.

Apart from the group stages of 2014, I think Euro 2000 was the last true great tournament excitement wise.

Completely forgot about 02. Probably due to all the ludicrous decisions going the hosts way.

Pretty emotional stuff on RTE just now as it's John Giles' last match as a pundit. That highlight reel  :( The tears in his eyes as Dunphy was doing his farewell speech. :( :(

Points calculation is in progress on the uefa site so we should know who's who the fantasy league soon.

Euro 2004 was gooseberry fool except for Czech Republic. I loved that team. The 3-2 against Holland is the best game I've ever watched

International football is at its lowest ebb ever, but now we have Russia, a weird continental Euros and Qatar to look forward to. It's going to get progressively worse. Very depressing.

Copa America put this tournament to shame! Pity the matches were at 3 or 4 AM.

They need to get rid of this 3rd place qualification system, there's been way too many negative matches. Portugal are champions after beating ONE team in 90 minutes... 24 teams doesn't work, just make it 32 please UEFA. There's enough decent teams to make it work.

Would have been nice for France to win but I'm not too fussed. Deschamps got just about everything wrong - subbing Payet, bringing Gignac on, not giving Martial any gametime, leaving Benzema, Gameiro, Lacazette, Ben Arfa & Dembele, bringing hardly any creative midfielders.

I loved 2010. Africa's first World Cup, Maradona coaching Argentina, Ghana being pretty damn good, Spain being gooseberry fool hot, Germany strawberry floating smashing England and Argentina, Ghana v Uruguay, best World Cup song ever, everyone getting pissed off at vuvuzelas, people decking each other in the final etc.

It was probably one of my favourites.

Over 30 years listening to John, essentially grew up watching him analyse football. He's also a genuinely lovely man, ran into him in a pub years ago, I'll miss him dearly. Take care John.

Didn't do anything for me really. Some good moments but pretty forgettable.

I think when that gooseberry fool ITV commentator started saying stuff like "Gooooal Bafanabafana! Goal United States of Africa!" I just gave up on it. :dread:

I love that people are using this as a scapegoat for all the gooseberry fool performances this tournament. Most of these bad matches were by teams that always play in these big tournaments or by teams that would have qualified anyway without the extra spots. What was the excuse for the last poor tournament before this one? You get good years, you get bad ones, that's all there is to it.

I think what he meant was the 3rd place qualification meant that teams could go down the cautious route and qualify by drawing every game 0-0. I have no problem with them expanding the tournament further and bring in a few more teams but only have two teams go through from each group like the World Cup. I think Europe has enough depth to support it.

As someone who doesn't normally follow football, I'm a bit confused by people saying they're so pleased for Ronaldo, and that he really deserves this. I always thought he was broadly disliked for being a massive wanker, no?

Some like him, some dislike him and some think both.

He can be a massive wanker on the pitch or when speaking after a game, for example when he showed zero grace by accusing Iceland of having a “small mentality”. Off the pitch he seems a decent enough bloke.

Also people find it hilarious that he has now won a major international tournament when Messi hasn’t.

He can be a wanker, but he's also an enormous talent and a joy to watch.

I actually like him. More footballers with real character are what the game needs. It also clearly meant a lot to him as well, which is nice to see for such a massive player.
