The point is that most commentators are gooseberry fool, it is unfair to single out Lawro.

Lawrenson seems to get behind the microphone looking to make each game a worse experience for anyone who has to listen to him. The standard of commentary isn't great but that doesn't excuse his terribleness.

Ray Hudson is the best ever, a proper brilliant co-commentator :D

Most, TBH. Like PS said above, he is a professional miserablist. He's been phoning it in for the past few tournaments he's been at. Euro 2012 was a particular nadir - I don't know if his dog had just died or something but he just sounded sick of life and bored of football. His 2012 was like Motson's 2002 World Cup - very, very clear he just wasn't up to it any more.

He talks about football as if he hasn't watched a football game for the past 15 years, simply because he can't be bothered. He's one of those (and there are many) who still thinks 4-4-2 is the only formation. Ask him who should play up front for England and he'll tell you Hodgson needs to work out who's going to partner Rooney. He has a set of three or four default opinions that he falls back on time and again because it's easier than doing research or moving with the times.

I dunno, he's just a relic, something reflected by the fact he's not going to the tournament. The only surprising thing is that it's taken the BBC this long.

You didn't name any names. ;)

Michael Owen? Robbie Savage? Phil Neville? Alan Smith? Niall Quinn?

All of those are far far worse than Lawro. It doesn’t excuse Lawro being gooseberry fool, but he is far from the worst offender.

I don't think Smith is that bad. I also like Danny Mills, and while Hoddle is a bit of a bell-end, I like some of his insights.

Most ex player TV pundits seem pretty awful to me. I like Jenas, he is good. And GNev. I'm sure I've forgotten some other good examples but in general I wish they would take some actual decent journalists rather than just ex players.

Ask any of these so called pundits who England need to play up front and they all will say Rooney. So not sure why you just having a go at him for that. When Rooney is poor up front then they will say he needs to play in midfield because he has the passing range. When his poor in midfield they'd say he had nobody to pass to and he needs to play upfront.

Alan Smith is ok as you don't really notice him which is the nicest thing I can say about his commentary. Hargreaves, Owen, McManaman, Murphy and Savage are the worst culprits.

Would prefer that. Some ex players refuse to have a go at certain player because they could end up coaching that player. Pundits like Gray and Hansen were good because they never were interested in coaching, so never really held back. Then you have the likes of Keane and Souness who are entertaining as they don't really give a crap.

It's going to be awkward for Neville when he comes back after his failed managerial stint.

It was emblematic of his attitude; it's what's known as an 'example'. Ie, in Lawro's world, if it was correct 10 years ago it is still correct.

I just hate him.

Don't even get me started on Jonathan Pearce, by the way

My favourite memory of Jonathan Pearce is his utter meltdown in the World Cup during the France v Honduras game due to his inability to understand how goal-line technology works. I remember he was commentating on a game a couple of days later and he was still struggling to grasp what happened in the game.

EDIT: I think this is it, can't check as I'm in work.

Such a simple process and he just can't grasp it. So good

That's pretty devastating. Hugely important in the system England play.

I wonder if Welbeck was one of the players he was hoping would be passed fit before then.

Unfortunate with him being one of the best performers in qualifying, but hopefully with the lack of depth out wide now, there's a chance we can play something like a diamond in midfield that I think would suit most the players.

Was Townsend in that original squad? I think he may well go.

Given the way Roy likes to play and how Townsend has never let Roy down plus that he's pretty much been newcastles best player since joining them I don't have an issue with him getting selected.

Ray Hudson's an absolute hero. I don't even care about La Liga and was watching some games on it this season on Bwin purely for his commentary.
