Eurovision 2017

As the Eurovision Song Contest draws near, another year of glorious cheesy goodness is upon us.

Dates: May 9, 2017 – May 13, 2017
Semi-final 2: 11 May 2017
Semi-final 1: 9 May 2017
Final: 13 May 2017

The participants:

https://eurovision.tv/participants

Some of my favourites so far:

Moldova: Always a good showing, this year Sunstroke Project is back with Epic Sax guy and Epic Violin guy...

Sweden: Robin Bengtsson - I Can't Go On

Robin seems to be trying to channel his inner Justin Timberlake while ripping off the original OK Go music video...

OK Go for comparison:

Italy: Francesco Gabbani - Occidentali's Karma

Typical European quirkiness, catchy tune though.

Montenegro: Slavko Kalezić - Space

We're reaching levels of European Weirdness that shouldn't even be possible!

Australia: Isaiah - Don't Come Easy

This guy needs to choose a more subtle shade of lip gloss, but damn I like this song. Sadly the quirky ones rarely win, so I'd say this one has a pretty good shot of winning.

Who's your favourite? How badly will England do this year? What Non-European nation will be next to join?!

I love watching this as it is a complete freakshow. Few beers, some munchies. Great night in.

I used to hate the idea of Eurovision but the wife loves it and I have seen the show for the last few years and am converted. It is actually hilarious and even has the odd good song (and sometimes just an odd song) here and there.

Panic averted! Seeing this thread made me think it would be on this Saturday when I'm gonna be out. Phew! I never used to watch it but I've got into it for the past few years.

It's crazy and brilliant and odd and ace and ever-so-slightly camp.

We used to watch it as a family and laugh our arses off, so I've always had fond memories of it. It's not so funny any more sadly, but me and the Mrs get shitfaced and watch it all the same.

Last year's was dreadful. Everyone just voting for the dreary Ukraine song (despite it being awful musically and dull as anything) to make themselves feel better about Russia existing.

Not massively hopeful about this years, but we'll see.

They are all bound to vote for us as we haven't pissed any other countries off recently. :dread:

Ironically I think THIS year we may benefit because we're so notable, but also because a lot of people see the song as a 'pray for London' after the Westminster attacks.

I think in future we may be more screwed.

Right so you mean "best song" as in "people might vote for us due to a number of factors" not "best" as in "good"

I was being a bit obtuse!

Either way, I like it a lot - sorta belongs in a musical. She's a really good singer as well. She'll absolutely smash it live. Reception has been generally been good.

Classic DML ;)

I haven't really listened to it since the live show to pick a song, but I didn't think much of it then. Will have another listen later but I can't imagine I'll think much more of it. Songs in musicals should really be catchy for it to be a good musical song. It's what Tim Minchin doesn't seem to understand yet :shifty:
