They might be too polite to say they are offended.

Native Indians consider that offensive though. Japanese people don't find someone wearing a kimono offensive.

What are either of these statements based on?

There was a really good thread on Twitter about cultural appropriation (within video games but applies generally) and how there can be a non-regressive/sensitive/"good" way of doing it but blindly playing down any objection coming from a place that is overly sensitive or perpetually offended isn't going to help.

Ironically the kimono has its origins in China, the Japanese culturally appropriated it.

I think the term 'cultural appropriation' is very confusing if you aren't deep into liberal Twitter (and similar communities).

To my mind, if you are respectful and do a basic level of research when making use of other cultures, then that's not really 'cultural appropriation' or at least not in a negative way. But if you're making fun of the other culture or propagating stereotypes about it then that can obviously come across as a bit racist.

Cultures mixing in a respectful way is a wonderful thing, we shouldn't be seeking to lock ourselves into monocultural tribes that can't communicate with or understand each other. Most people who talk about 'cultural appropriation' don't want this, of course, they just want to make sure that when cultures mix no-one's being exploited. In that sense it's good people are talking about it.

(P.S. I literally haven't seen the act so I don't know if it's offensive or not, just making a broader point)

"Offensive" is a harsh term, but it certainly seemed inappropriate (along with being unrelated to the song in question, and therefore somewhat unnecessary). Asian Twitter wasn't on board with it.

Asian Twitter wasn’t on board with it. Following a couple of Asian people doesn’t mean the whole of Asia feel the same way.

I was going to quote the Tokyo Fashion tweet to show people in Tokyo don’t agree with this outrage. Then I spotted the other one and it made me laugh as it summed up my thoughts on Frank’s “Asian Twitter” comment. A 16 from England commenting on the “issue” is as relevant as an Irene from the U.K. commenting on it.

I don’t agree with mocking other cultures, but I detest the cultural appropriation bullshit that flies around online now. Cultures should mix and blend together, cultural segregation is never good.

I hope the 'cultural appropriation' twitter bores never visit Volendam in Holland, as they have shops where tourists can get dressed up in traditional Dutch outfits and have their picture taken.

I'm sure there's some morons out there who would find it offensive.

I hate the '4 people complain on Twitter, thats now a news story' scthick.

In the same way OFCOM don't launch an investigation until there is enough complaints, papers shouldn't be able to sensationalise something like this until there are enough complaints, because we waste so much time covering the opinions of basically no-one.

They shouldn't sensationalise at all, they should report stuff as it is and not egg it up for effect. If it is an outrage gooseberry fool loads will be outraged and so they can report on the outrage.

This is different because it's a shop in Holland, presumably run by Netherlanders. It's someone Dutch saying "hey guys, come and appreciate my culture". You can see how that's different from an Israeli woman turning up to make chicken noises while wearing a kimono backed by an army of lucky cats, right? Same with Moggy's tweet, really: "it's highly promoted there, and at any Japanese related event.". Yeah, if you're in Japan, at a Japanese event, by all means, wear a kimono and try and be respectful.

I don't understand why you can't have a discussion about this sort of thing, too. You're either "triggered", or you "detest the cultural appropriation bullshit that flies around online now". It's one extreme or the other, there's no middle ground. Isn't that kind of tedious in itself? There's no relaxed "guys this feels wrong", it's "FOR strawberry float'S SAKE SHUT UP WITH THE CULTURAL APPROPRIATION BULLSHIT THERE'S NO PROBLEM WITH THIS, I, AS A WHITE MAN, HAVE NO ISSUE WITH THIS WHATSOEVER SO PEOPLE SHOULD JUST SHUT UP AND ENJOY IT"

I also don't think it helps that there's very little actual asian represenatation in the eurovision song contest.

Also it was a dreadful song regardless of what she was wearing. Should have just dressed up like a chicken and buggered the lucky cats off.
