Well, I've had Evolve for a while now, both on PC and PS4. Time for some thoughts about my experience of this game. I've never taken the game online. I'm simply not good enough (and never will be) and I'm not interested in playing against Level 40 players who just want to kick me. Most of you will know already that I'm just not a MP sort of gamer. If you're not interested in the Solo aspects of the game you needn't read on.
So, with that in mind, how has the strictly-Solo experience been? I've found it pretty enjoyable, tbh. I'm a Level 14 on PS4 and a Level 13 on PC. It's taken a while - I'm assuming it's taking a lot longer to level-up in SP than it would have taken if I'd been playing online (as is usually the case with these kind of games). I don't mind. The Solo experience allows me to set my own pace and checkmark which gameplay parameters I want applied for each map and mode. I really appreciate the flexibility the devs have provided - this has given me the confidence, starting from basically 'easy everything', to move into more tricky settings and it's proving to be great fun.
I was surprised at the sheer (Shear?) amount of offline play there is in Evolve. For a game so heavily marketed as 'the next big MP phenomenon', it's actually got a very sturdy SP element - easily as enjoyable as my other favourite, Killzone SF, in this respect. From one-off bespoke matches to the surprisingly satisfying Evacuation mode spread across five maps, I love the variety. Most of all, I love the fact I get to enjoy an offline SP career with rewards, progression and unlocks along the way. It's also great how the Hunter Team can be tailored for each match with customisations - and
really good that I can swop out playing against a monster I don't particularly enjoy (p*ss off, Wraith).
I caved early on (as soon as I saw how robust the SP elements of the game were) and bought the Season Pass with the 4 new Hunters (yes, on both platforms
). Having options is good when you're settling in for a long haul. I like the new Hunters, although I still can't quite figure out how Crow's bird (Gobi) is actually helpful in the same way as Maggie's Daisy is. Then again, not relying on Daisy to take me to the monster introduces a nice element of uncertainty. The only other Hunter I've unlocked apart from the default four and the 4 on DLC is Hyde (Assault). As I said: I'm going to be at this for a good long while by the look of things.
I like the maps, too. I agree they can all look a bit samey - but when 'samey' is so rich with detail (on both PC and PS4) I don't mind. Being able to choose an option like 'Clear Skies' to remove rain, snow, etc and bathe the maps in clear sunlight and shadow is my favourite 'Map Event' setting. I love the feeling of verticality the maps give - they feel massive in scale and sometimes (in, say, a map like Aviary) it really pays to just pause and take a good look around at your surroundings. Two new free maps are due to drop on April 30th. Can't wait.
If only Titanfall had a SP element like Evolve's.
Such a missed opportunity. I'd be playing that game every night, too - really making the most of all the DLC I bought for it. Evolve is a fantastic game - from my initial wariness of this being a MP-only shootfest, it's gradually become one of my most played and enjoyed games of this year (so far). I never expected much from it, tbh. What I've got is another of my favourite type of game: the infinite replayability game. In the end, it's proven to have been money well spent.
