At one time, Takafumi Horie was the most powerful man in Japan. Now, he's not. He does have a lot of followers on Twitter.

The Tokyo University dropout headed up internet portal Livedoor and attempted to not only buy an Osaka baseball team, but also carry out a hostile takeover of a major Japanese television network and create a space tourism company.

In 2005, the outspoken Horie ran for political office — something I covered firsthand. After being arrested for securities fraud in 2006, Horie, who is known as "Horiemon" in Japan, was sent to jail for 2 and a half years. Around the time he got out of prison, Horie mentioned that he had purchased a PlayStation 3, but later, he would go on to say that Sony should sell its game division to Microsoft because the console market is high risk, high return.

Back when Horie was a billionaire information technology exec, he was thinking about trying to take over Sony, too. In his latest book, Horie apparently once again declares, "Sony should leave the game business."

Maybe leave running PlayStation to SCEA/SCEE, but leaving when they have so many great development studios? Crazy fool.

It just comes down to economics, when your business plan involves your console still being sold at a loss over four years after launch then it is probably time to bail out.

I would happily agree with this.

How can they still be selling their console at a loss, I know sony are a multi billion dollar company, but surely there's a better way.

Sony should buy Microsoft.

MS are dead in the water anyway, so why even try to carry on?

Remind me again, the original Xbox came out 2002, when did MS start making a profit on it?

The PS1 and PS2 did ok with that business plan. I'm not sure if they were still selling at a loss after four years but certainly for the first 2 or 3.

Edit: And the PS3 is break-even now anyway, if not profitable.

Just accept it, they're dead.

Only a matter of time before Windows becomes Sony Playdo.

Spot on. It's why they''ve gone under. Sony are wise to snap them up now they're floundering. Brilliant business move from JT. I've heard he's just shutting down the company and taking on the IP under the Sony banner.

Unlikely, MS have just sold a 42 billion per year advertising deal to Amstrad to show the Amstrad logo instead of the "blue screen of death" in Windows.

It's all part of the plan, it's just a placeholder to be replaced by "welcome to the third place" once Sony Playdo 8 goes live.

That is why they changed their business model, it took time to buy your way into the industry but they have turned a profit for the last couple of years.

Sony have lost all the money they made on PS1/PS2 and more with the PS3, they still sell it for a loss as Kaz admitted. Spending millions on R&D on a CPU in a machine that has struggled to match a much cheaper competitor has got to be the worst idea ever.

As for the PSP

But Rik, your are changing your tune as always.

but as it's Rik's favourite, it doesn't count.

Do you really think that by the end of the PS3's life it won't have turned in a profit? When you get so far with a plan it isn't always possible to cut your losses. What would they have now if they did?

Rik living in the world of tunnel vision, as usual. Do you ever, and I do mean ever, plan ahead?

To be fair to Rik, who I don't usually agree with, it's a bit of a stretch to compare the two instances.

On one hand you have Microsoft, new to the industry, trying to break in and garner new customers and get a segment of the industry, and on the other you have Sony, who cleared up last round with an incredibly large and established customer base.

MS needed to sell at a loss to get some Pie, Sony shouldn't have to.
