Only Police Intelligence prior to the event can stop something like this from happening. Once he's on the street with it, the only hope left is that it fails to detonate.

In terms of any mass gathering of people, there will always be that issue between the point at which you enter the venue and the security measures in place. I don't know how you protect against that. And even if you had security, what are they going to do. You could still detonate it presumably in the process of taking it off.

Security checks naturally form a choke point which is easy to exploit. Doesn't matter if you put the gate at the doors, inside a foyer or further away off site.

Wouldn't have stopped this one anyway as it was at end of concert, gates would have been wide open to let people out quickly.

Apparently bag checks were nigh on non-existant anyway according to many people, so he could have easily taken it into the venue. It's an important lesson learned going forward, but in this case it would have been an irrelevance in preventing the attack.

Think how long queue is for bag check at airport? I've waited an hour before. Should they check all bags before you have even entered the building?

It isn't practical to do that.

I know it's unpopular here but I can see the reason behind internet security and am becoming more in favour of it.

Just down the road from me. This, coupled with the fact the intel service know the guy's name, suggests they're rounding up known associates.

EDIT: Just to be clear, no confirmed link to the bombing and the above, but it's quite likely.

Yup, looks like it. This is pretty much standard procedure now - arrest all the associates, question them, then usually the vast majority are released.

Reports now that the Arndale has been evacuated. Again, not confirmed. Hopefully just a precaution if true.

EDIT: Police cordons going down. Inevitably this was nothing but a precaution.

You need to disperse the choke points. It's not such an issue at a football stadium for example as you have multiple secure entry and exit points. The goal is to reduce the queue and disperse the people.

Exiting a stadium is a bit different and I feel this could be managed by staging the exits of different blocks of the crowd.

This is awful, awful news, the poor kids and families, just horrendous.

I'm at Manchester Arena next Tuesday to see KISS if it goes ahead (I'd imagine it will do by then), then Saturday at the Etihad Stadium for Robbie Williams, Guns 'N Roses in London 16th June, then Twickenham for U2 on the Saturday and Sunday in July, it will be nervous times if anything else happens in the near future.

I've been reading the reports all morning. One witness said he saw a young girl, about eight, with both legs blown off. He said he also tried to help an older lady but she sadly passed away in his arms.....

Eyes have been welling up.

And incredible rage too.

Can't help but feel that this is going to get a whole lot more depressing once we hear details about the victims/families involved. It's just horrendous to think about. Can't begin to comprehend what it would be like to be caught up in something like this, let alone be severely injured or to lose someone. All so strawberry floating senseless.

I like how trump called the bomber a loser. Repeatedly looked at the camera and called him 'a loser, he's not a monster, he would like that, he's a loser, a evil loser, a loser.' something like that.

Israel manages to search all bags before entering places with mass people such as arenas, cinemas and shopping centers. i instruct my gf to take as little as possible when visiting these places. It is possible.

Probably the most coherent thing Trump has ever said.

A 23 year old man has been arrested in connection with the bombing.

Police also believe they know the identity if the bomber.

I think Trump's just hamstrung in terms of what he wants to say by where he happens to be at the moment...
