I dont like how yesterday they were running hard with the search for one girl (among the many still unaccounted for), because she was the pretty one and a good face to sell the story on.

Just had a quick look over the papers too and they are all running the same pics of the 8 year old and a few with the pretty lass from yesterday. Yeah its obviously a shame they are dead but the first example was pretty despicable as far as Im concerned and the second must be devastating for the family to have her face printed everywhere, though I understand her mother is still in hospital too.

From what I saw only The Star(!) has run pictures of the males unaccounted for on the front page.

Fyi, this isnt a mens rights rant or anything stupid like that. More a solo reflection on the bad taste the media is leaving in regards to the whole thing.

Yeh fair enough I guess. I just can't stand it! The other half was watching Breakfast this morning at it was awful. :dread:

I can't stand it either, I avoided it on TV yesterday as much as I could and will do the same today.

To me - it just comes across as a bit false and attention seeking. Its a despicable and cowardly act and god knows what the poor families are going through but my overriding emotions are anger at the perpetrators, pride in the response of my mancunians and above all relief that (given my closeness to the area) none of my family or friends were killed or injured.

It just seems that whenever stuff like this occurs - there seems to be an element of almost grief bandwagon jumping from people wholly unconnected to events. Sorry - I know this may not be a popular opinion.

Well I totally agree with that too, 100%.

Agreed.

I saw this image on reddit:

Apart from the racism, it is fairly accurate process of what seems to happen when these events occur.
I guess it is because you actually can't do anything. Any random psychopath could decide to do it, at anytime. Which is scary stuff.

So while the social media stuff can get annoying - what else can people do to comfort themselves?

100%. So many "thoughts and prayers." strawberry float your thoughts and prayers. Book a blood bank donation, volunteer to help out at a victim support centre, donate to the MEN appeal. Do something.

I'm not a Mancunian but I do live here. I felt great pride in my adopted city last night, and sadness at what had happened. I wasn't heartbroken nor was I devastated and life goes the strawberry float on.

Don't grief police. If people want to tell others they're heartbroken over an actually awful thing happening, I don't see anything wrong with it.

I agree with this.

I don't know any of the victims or their families, but I feel this as a body blow, I was shocked and saddened at what has happened, I still am. I don't particularly want to be labeled as a 'grief bandwagon' jumper, thanks.

It's ok to share if your outraged or angry but not heartbroken. Ridiculous.

For something to make me heartbroken - it has to be very personal to me. I'm not sure how you can be devastated or heartbroken at the death of strangers (however tragic their demise was). What words do you then use if you lose someone close to you?

Like I said - I am quite callous and I did add the caveat that I knew not everyone would agree.

I'm shocked and saddened. I'm just not heartbroken or devastated.

Don't seek offence where none was intended. Other you're just an offence bandwagon jumper. :P

Can we please not have this thread descend into back and forth about what we think is a right level of empathy etc. That sort of conversation maybe better suited to the chat/things that annoy you threads.

Thanks

I wasn't intending to single you out, your remark was the first I found.

But people shouldn't be telling people how to handle their grief because it differs from their own. If people want to post stuff on Facebook/ forums etc, light a candle, say a prayer, well that's up to them and if it helps them to process what has happened, so be it.

Edit: I won't say anymore about this.

I was really upset about it yesterday. People deal with different things in different ways.

This is what was leaked by the Americans and then reported by their media yesterday evening. The best allies, the best!

Question from an ignoramus - does the UK currently revoke passports for people that go and fight for ISIS?

I would like to think so, given potential security issues.

Some light research shows that we don't, due to international law requiring that no person be left stateless. Can may be applied to those with dual nationality, but seems unlikely.
