Played a game of infection on sandtrap tonight with fast zombies chasing all of us in vehicles, just like all those years ago. The guys who made this are champions.

I like those field of view changes. The guns taking up 1/3 of the screen is what bugged me most about Halo.

Microsoft really dropped the ball with Halo on PC

It changed even more with Halo 4 (for the worse) but it changed back for 5. Mantling, running, ground pound and thrust melee added but for everyone.

Going from Halo 5 back to Halo 3 is startling to see how slow 3 is in comparison.

To be honest, it looks like ElDewrito's mod and Microsoft taking notice will be good thing in the end.

As Microsoft’s need to protect its IP spun up, we reached out to members of the ElDewrito team to have an open discussion about the project and the admittedly difficult situation we all find ourselves in. The ElDewrito team is understandably upset at this outcome given the time they’ve each invested in this project, but they understand the legal implications and the need to press pause on this work. One thing remains clear – the community really wants more Halo on PC. As we look ahead, we’re very excited about the prospects of an official classic Halo experience making its way to PC and we hope to be able to partner with the ElDewrito team and broader mod and content creation community to help inform the types of experiences and features our fans desire. While we have nothing to announce today, please know that the PC community is very important to us and top of mind as we work towards the future.

We’d like to extend our thanks to the community at large for constantly pouring so much passion into Halo. While it’s unfortunate to find ourselves as the bearers of bad legal news, the outpouring of support and excitement is inspiring and together, in partnership with this community, we believe we can really do great things for the future of Halo.

If MCC is announced for PC and the ELDewrito were brought on board to advise on modding and/or officially brought in, would that be a good thing?

I honestly think Microsoft is going to try not f*** this up for the good of the IP. I expect MCC announced on PC at E3.

That's what this is about; the brand is more important than the quality of the products therein. Sega let fans make the best sonic game in years for them and garnered lots of positive press in the process. I also place no faith in the mealy-mouthed "we love the passion of the community" platitudes of people who have been publically shown up by a group of amateurs making what people actually want to play. Hell, lets complete the bingo card; lootboxes, microtransactions, how do I function, am I genuinely mental, [insert old post of mine about lootboxes here].

This was always going to happen though. If MS don't want to pish off PC Halo fans they'll do the right thing. Reading the Reddit ED stuff is genuinely funny though.

I guarantee is MCC is announced for PC people will still be going ape sh*t for whatever reason.

It's the 'done' thing, everyone in here was criticising MS's game pass first party strategy saying loot boxes and micro transactions and its 2 big games so far (SoT's and State of Decay 2) have nothing of the sort. You think these people will retract posts or say they were wrong? nope.

Will Trelliz say he was wrong if MCC is announced on PC? not a strawberry floating chance.

Forums' gonna forum.

Just sack everyone at 343i and employ these dudes :datass:

Same goes for Sega and Sonic Team.

343i worked on the base code ED was derived from. It’s kinda the issue here.

Stinkles/Frank O'Conner from 343 -

BTW, we’re not “shutting down the mod” or going after the Eldewrito crew - we’re enacting action to remove the Halo Online code and packages from places it’s being hosted. The distinction may seem like semantics to a lot of folks, and I don’t blame them for assuming that, but to be clear, this is a legally necessary step to protect code, product, IP, trademarks and copyrights, and is not optional. We’re a publicly traded company, and we have a fiduciary and legal responsibility to our shareholders, and further, if we don’t take steps to protect it, then we actually run the legal risk of losing it - and there’s code and content in there that is still very much in use.

As a company, we spend a lot of time, effort and resources to support, amplify and enable our community creators - we have a simple set of rules that are generous and fair, that as long as they are abided by, we’re happy to help with and in some cases, promote.

Halo Online code and content is not within those rules.

I hope nobody on this site thinks anyone is happy about this - at one end of the spectrum, it’s sad to see folks’ hard work and effort be sunsetted, and on the other, all the people who do this stuff are human. Nobody takes joy in this kind of work or responsibility. It’s simply a necessary part of being a publicly traded company in the US.

If anyone wishes to send death threats, please direct those and Scholarly Legal Opinions to @franklez.

I won’t be responding to this thread, because effectively I’ve said everything I can say here, but my one ask - a favor - is that folks try to contextualize this within real world circumstances, and not apply intent or evil where none exists.

Unfortunately they have to do the C&D thing. Even if they don't want too. According to something I watched (may have been EZA) that if someone doesn't then if other copyright infringements are made they can lose in courts if they sue as the stuff they didn't C&D can be used as evidence as them allowing it.

Something like that. Still strawberry floating gooseberry fool. Nintendo do it too. They wait until the thing is out and has increased interest in their product and than, BAM, C&D.

It's shitty but that is a pretty decent response from Frank O'Connor. Also, good luck taking it down. It's on the PC which is basically Hydra.

They can't do anything about that, they just have to do enough to show that they're defending their IP, etc. Which makes me wonder how far into the production of this game did MS decide to go after it.

From Day 1 back when the original code leaked and as soon as they realised it was back up in the latest case.

EDIT:
Not only did Microsoft issue takedown notices at the time of the original leaks, but many elements of that underlying code and content are still actively being used today and will continue to be in the future.

From Resetera:

The people involved in the creation of the Halo Online modification have been here before. This is no one's first rodeo. Quoting from the ElDewrito website: "ElDewrito was created through the hard work of well known Halo fans, developers and modders like DEElekgolo, Gamecheat13, Lord Zedd and many others"

Gamecheat13 has received more cease and desists than anyone I have ever met - he was involved in thefts and leaks of Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 2 content from PartnerNet. He also hung around the 'Xbox Underground' crew responsible for a lot of the nonsense that was happening at the start of the generation (https://www.wired.com/story/xbox-underg ... e-hackers/). A genuinely bad person, time hasn't changed him in the slightest.

More recently, he used flaws in the Windows 10 Store to download a build of Halo Wars 2 that was intended for external testing partners, pull plot information out of the build and attempt to extort Microsoft with it. Later, he attempted to sell the build to the public at large. I can go on and on with increasingly recent examples of shithead behavior - he revealed the existence of a Steam/Win32 port of Halo Wars: DE, which he knew about definitely by legal means and not at all by playing around with the game's backend services.

Lord Zedd was involved in various questionably legal (not at all legal) Halo stuff. He acquired 360 developer hardware and used that hardware to screw around with Halo. Not exactly legal to seek out hardware for which you have no authorization to obtain, pirate a game and decrypt it so it runs on developer hardware, take said game onto PartnerNet and modify it. Also not a huge deal - no harm, no foul - but this is a way of saying that these people knew they would be flying close to the sun and flew anyway.

Considering how some of the people involved have been thorns in Microsoft's side for a long time, the way that Microsoft has treated this matter strikes me as generous, considerate even. An early build of a Russia only title that would later be cancelled was stolen; pulled from the companies web services. The build was not intended to be accessible by the outside world. Said build was an early development build. It contained a lot of Halo 3 content (the Russia only title was not a port of Halo 3). Immediately, the worst people start hacking on it. Years pass. The result is, of course, Halo 3 multiplayer, hacked together to mostly function.

The act is illegal in every way. It's not even a modification of a public build of the Russian title. There are assets ripped from Halo 3 360 included in ElDewrito - the maps used are from the early build of Halo Online but certain other assets were pulled by the modders from the Halo 3 360. There was no serious attempt to operate inside the confines of the law. These are people who routinely do illegal Xbox gooseberry fool doing more illegal Xbox gooseberry fool, just this time for an audience.

These Halo Online creators sound like a lovely bunch of lads. :dread:
