Sources: Microsoft plots Fable return

Work is underway on a brand new, big-budget Fable game, Eurogamer can reveal.

Fable franchise owner Microsoft has tasked UK developer Playground, which makes the Forza Horizon racing games for Xbox and PC, with creating this new Fable, sources close to the project have told Eurogamer. Microsoft said in a statement it does not comment on rumour or speculation.

We've heard the new Fable is planned as a story and character-focussed open-world action RPG. A significant investment in its development is also planned, with some 200 people set to work on the game at Playground's newly-established second office in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

Don't expect to play this new Fable any time soon, however. We've heard it's early days in terms of development, with Playground currently staffing up the team from double digits to its triple digit target.

This new Fable is seen as something of a clean break, and while all Fable Legends assets were backed up after Lionhead shut down, the expectation is Playground is starting from scratch as it bids to revive the Xbox-exclusive franchise.

By the time the next Xbox comes round I think Microsoft are going to be in a fighting position again. With the rumours of a new Perfect Dark too, they’re starting to get what made them a player in the first place.

Get investing in new IPs.

The main thing is that this game kinda proves the rumours to be true. Perfect Dark incoming. in 2019 I reckon though.

E3 gonna be interesting this year. I would like to see some new stuff though, not just rebooted old franchises.

A true openworld Fable is an exciting prospect, most we’ll see at E3 is a teaser if anything. I hope they have some new IP’s but that’s a big change for Fable and a third person Perfect Dark game is also a big change.

If they weren’t related to existing franchises they may as well be new IP’s.

Definitely. Playground already did with Horizon 3 and it’s MS’ business model.

Didn't Horizon 3 mostly use an Irish girl to do that?

That'd be Fable Fortune.

Also we really shouldn't be assuming gender roles here, there's every chance bear's aunt would be insulted by the assertion of their masculinity or lack thereof. Some people don't like being placed inside a tickbox. What is this, 2016?

This could be one of the first games where we get a glimpse of what to expect from next gen so worth checking even if you have no interest in the game itself.

Let's just get this out of the way: no way is this going to be better than BoTW.

BUT. I'm looking forward to it, Fable 2 is still one of my fondest gaming memories which, as I skipped F3, remains unsullied.

I skipped 3 for the same reason so if they can capture some of 2's charm and wit this will be wonderful. It's crucial that a UK studio is working on it.

It’s been a longtime but 1 was the peak of the series to me. Maybe it was a surprise at the time, maybe there was other software around that meant 2 didn’t grab me but the series has progressively gotten worst with each iteration, IMO.

Horizon and BOTW must be the influence going forward so I’m very keen to see where they take the series.

They've hired a Project lead from Horizon ZD and some Rockstar people also.

You're wrong about progressively worse. 2 is WAY better than 1. It's even Peter Molyneux's favourite.

I said something along these lines in the main Xbox thread but I really hope they don't end up making this as a reaction to BOTW. The original Fable had a bunch of systems in the background that never got fleshed out much in the sequels, instead they built other skin deep systems to sit alongside the existing mechanics.

Instead of being a BOTW wannabe I'd be more interested in seeing Fable adopt a version of the nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor. Start up a rivalry or alliance in the heroes guild that you can carry out into Albion and also have the various enemy factions react to you based on your actions. Build your own faction by inspiring young heroes to follow your righteous path or by spending money to hire a band of brigands so you can monopolize a trade route between towns. That sort of thing.
