For me a lot of the survival horror elements came from the one hit kill sections.
That chapter where you visit the mansion, and it feels like they're firmly settling into Resident Evil territory, only for the screen to turn blue every ten minutes for you to be chased by Ruvik who teleports and will one hit kill you, on top of all the action that happens in that chapter anyway (the bomb placement in that chapter a hindrance to blindly running away, Mikami being a sadistic bastard!). I also found item management very much in keeping with survival horror. Although I guess it would depend on which difficulty you played it, and how accurate you were, which encounters you were able to avoid to tackle stealthily. Occasionally I would die and seem to get more ammo drops too, and I would wonder if it was coincidence or part of the design.
I love this game so much. I hope we get a sequel.
