First up, for everyone that's crying on Steam forums about their game not working (particularly Nvidia users), I have no issues at all. Right from the off the game was running pretty good, but once I'd tweaked a few things in Nvidia control panel the game is now purring along nicely (two chapters in to date). GTX760 to the rescue.
Visually, I think the game is perfectly acceptable, though not 'oh-gosh-wow' by any stretch. Lots of people blaming idTech5; I disagree. Machine Games (Wolfenstein) showed that in the hands of skilled artists and designers Tech5 is capable of delivering a fine-looking game. Technical issues and shonky artwork are down entirely to the artists and designers at Tango. A good craftsman never blames his tools and any game engine is only as capable as the skills of those using it. Having said all that, the game looks nice! Not amazing, but nice.
Gamers crying over the aspect ratio.

This is why there are so few auteurs in the video game scene. Gamers are dumb f*cks almost 100% of the time, bleating for 'innovation' and 'artistic vision' but bursting into tears the moment a true auteur with a vision delivers on the promise. I don't mind the 'widescreen' effect of the black bars at all, whilst recognising completely that if Mikami's team had been better skilled they would possibly never have been necessary. So were those black bars an 'artistic expression' or a technical necessity? I don't care - I quite like them and shan't be making any effort to find a mod to remove them.
Gameplay IS very reminiscent of The Last of Us (Chapter 2, where I'm at), but - hell - I
like sneaking about stabbing zombies in the head.

I know the game gets all sorts of crazy further down the line and much, much harder and by then I probably won't be still playing because I'm a wuss and the moment things look like they're getting a little too punishing I bail, but I'll try and keep going as long as possible (I did 10 hours on Alien Isolation, after all, which I think was about half way through, before bailing on that one).
All in all, not bad. Not a triple-A title in the 'shiny production values' sense of the word, but doubtless a very enjoyable piece for true survival fans (of which I'm
not one).
