Does anybody know roughly how well my PC will handle this, if it can handle Alien with pretty much everything maxed?

I can run Alien maxed but struggled with this and changing settings done nothing at all (Even all the way down to 720p) and turning settings down/off didn't even make a difference to the graphics never mind the fps.

According to Digital Foundry, you're probably fine if you keep the 30FPS lock in place. They've shown pretty consistent performance between a GTX 980 and a 750Ti at max settings, with the 750 dropping frames here and there in line with the console versions. No card they've tried managed a consistent 60FPS if you up the limit though, not even the 980.

So after playing for quite a while, I still love this, but there are some massive issues. If Mikami has had dealings with this game, why does it have all the trademarks of the RE series but is worse than nearly all of them :fp:

The controls, let's face it are rubbish. The ones from REmake are better, why not just copy them, the 180 degree turn is great, but the camera doesn't move with you so you end up not knowing where you're going

The camera is awful. I know rudderless said the FOV is it? Was deliberate then it's the wrong decision. Going down a dark corridor trying to take on multiple enemies when it pretty much closes in on one is poor design imo.

The graphics aren't great either. I take it this is because it's been developed cross gen again :|

And the story, I still have no idea what's going on, and I'm at chapter 7. The characters are toss. They are borderline awful.

But in spite of all that :shifty: the setting, music, gameplay, all the little bits, like the hospital save point, the music that accompanies it, the little snippets everywhere ala RE all make it classic survival horror. And it's something I love so much. Walking up a path seeing lightening crashing down and a house at the top of the hill is still brilliant to this day.

I hope to see a genuine next gen sequel please shinji. A comfortable 7,8/10 so far.

Oh and the enemies are stupid. :slol:

I've been there. It's a dark place. When I was at my worst, I even enjoyed Saw: Flesh and Blood. Hell, enjoyed? I loved it.

First up, for everyone that's crying on Steam forums about their game not working (particularly Nvidia users), I have no issues at all. Right from the off the game was running pretty good, but once I'd tweaked a few things in Nvidia control panel the game is now purring along nicely (two chapters in to date). GTX760 to the rescue.

Visually, I think the game is perfectly acceptable, though not 'oh-gosh-wow' by any stretch. Lots of people blaming idTech5; I disagree. Machine Games (Wolfenstein) showed that in the hands of skilled artists and designers Tech5 is capable of delivering a fine-looking game. Technical issues and shonky artwork are down entirely to the artists and designers at Tango. A good craftsman never blames his tools and any game engine is only as capable as the skills of those using it. Having said all that, the game looks nice! Not amazing, but nice.

Gamers crying over the aspect ratio. :fp: This is why there are so few auteurs in the video game scene. Gamers are dumb f*cks almost 100% of the time, bleating for 'innovation' and 'artistic vision' but bursting into tears the moment a true auteur with a vision delivers on the promise. I don't mind the 'widescreen' effect of the black bars at all, whilst recognising completely that if Mikami's team had been better skilled they would possibly never have been necessary. So were those black bars an 'artistic expression' or a technical necessity? I don't care - I quite like them and shan't be making any effort to find a mod to remove them.

Gameplay IS very reminiscent of The Last of Us (Chapter 2, where I'm at), but - hell - I like sneaking about stabbing zombies in the head. I know the game gets all sorts of crazy further down the line and much, much harder and by then I probably won't be still playing because I'm a wuss and the moment things look like they're getting a little too punishing I bail, but I'll try and keep going as long as possible (I did 10 hours on Alien Isolation, after all, which I think was about half way through, before bailing on that one).

All in all, not bad. Not a triple-A title in the 'shiny production values' sense of the word, but doubtless a very enjoyable piece for true survival fans (of which I'm not one).

About the controls... please elaborate? How does this differ from Resi4 or pretty much every game since?

I think with the 'controls' it's a combination of having to regularly grapple with the camera, the obstructive FOV and the odd-looking animation of the main character. Altogether, it's pretty clunky.

I've played 3 chapters and have to say I've not really encountered those kinds of problems with the controls - the only issue for me is not being able to switch shoulder manually, but I've found you can pretty easily force it just by moving in that direction a tiny bit and playing with the camera. The actual stealth controls I thought were very good, felt very analogue in terms of sneaking about in a way that reminded me of Chaos Theory, you can inch forward really slowly with really minute direction on the control stick if you're careful enough (I'm playing on PS4).

Found it a very stressful/tense experience so far, you can definitely feel the Resident Evil 4 lineage, and I love the way the game puts you in situations where everything goes very wrong very quickly. Case in point from Chapter 3:

I clocked the guy chained up in the barn and figured he'd be key to getting through the big gate, so I thought I'd lob a grenade over to (hopefully) do a load of damage before I inevitably had to fight him. Went towards the big wooden wall where he's chained up so I could throw said grenade and before I had a chance he just burst through of his own volition and scared the crap out of me. All my carefully laid plans went totally out of the window and I ended up frantically backpedalling trying to shoot him with the suddenly very slow-feeling crossbow (how great to be able to move and shoot by the way, what a luxury)

So there's now a Flawless Widescreen module for this that apparently fixes the letterboxing and FOV issues, allowing for further adjustment if you want to fiddle. Just install Flawless Widescreen and pick The Evil Within from the list before launching the game.

http://www.flawlesswidescreen.org/

I think the letterbox fix is a proper one, showing you more of the screen rather than zooming you in like the console command.

Woah, that's a huge strawberry floating improvement.

Shame this'll never run on my PC. I can't see myself picking it up on consoles with that FOV. Resident Evil 6 made me nauseous with the way the camera moved while being so close to the player and this looks even worse.

I've been enjoying this on pc without changing anything. I just used that widescreen software and changed it to 60 fps and I wish I had done it earlier it's so much better.
