Microsoft targets overweight gamers with new patent A newly disclosed Microsoft patent application -- Avatar Individualized by Physical Characteristic -- takes aim at fat people, proposing to generate fat avatars in gaming environments for individuals whose health records indicate they're overweight, limiting their game play, and even banning them. I can see a juicy lawsuit for discrimination being drawn up if this is real.

Am I missing something here? How do Microsoft get access to your health records? Sounds like a load of guff to me.

Vitality sensor peripheral? I can see the avatar changing to look more like its creator, but banning people because they're unfit? Yeah, right

That's obviously nonsense then. Even ignoring the PC brigade, it wouldn't make any business sense whatsoever. It's also not Microsoft's responsibility to manage the health of their customers.

That does sound like rubbish to me. I'd understand if it was just some sort of little hint (like Brain Training, where he exclaims about how late it is, or thinks that you've been playing for too long), but that's just a hint, he never actually prevents you from playing the game.

Even if there's an ounce of truth in this (which I somewhat doubt there is), what right does any company have to dictate how consumers use their products?

If I sit playing games to the point where it affects my health, then that's my own fault not Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo's.

Nintendo did it first.
