Father Ted to us is like only fools and fawlty towers to you, Irish humour that to be honest didn't think would travel that well.

But Irish TV refused to pick it up because of Catholicism's stranglehold on their culture - so they took it to Britain. And the controller of Channel 4 saw that it was good...

Been through this a thousand times, rte turned it down, no cos of the church (rte shows it too). Irish writers and actors, and Irish humour, claim the financial rights all you want but it's all Irish. I love only fools and fawlty towers, I just didn't think this would travel is all.

RTÉ turned it down because it was funny and RTÉ feel there is no need to fund any more comedy since they made Halls Pictorial Weekly years ago and that was enough. Now they fund shite like Republic of Telly.

Thank god it wasn't Podge & Rodge, that's all I can say.

It is a myth that Father Ted was offered to, and turned down by, RTE.

Graham Linehan:

‘We didn’t do it with RTÉ because we were in England and we had a career there, so it would have been strange to go back to Ireland and start from the bottom in RTÉ, a company that never really made a successful studio sitcom. Because there was no infrastructure in Ireland for those kind of studio sitcoms, it would have been crazy to give it to them. RTÉ did many great things but studio sitcoms was not one of them.’

An absolute masterclass in comedy. One of the better things Father Ted's writers always managed to do was bring back a gag and squeeze another laugh out of it (the joke arms in "Escape from Victory", for example, or the sound effects record in "Chirpy Burpy Cheep Sheep"). Speed 3 has easily the highest concentration of these, with "the Brick" in particular forming the basis of an early cheap gag, a Father Jack skit, being important to the plot resolution AND an end of episode stinger.
