Has anyone ever had problems with a faulty gas meter?

I have just changed energy provider to one who require a meter reading every month. Everything has been going fine with them taking the amount quoted until this month when I received a bill for over £600 for June and July's gas usage. I've spoken with First Utility who have asked me to submit meter readings for the next two weeks to determine if it is worth them sending someone round to look at the meter.

I obviously haven't been using the central heating for the past two months, I'm out all day, the central and water heating is on a timer so I haven't been heating anything constantly. Would I smell a leak if it was of an amount that was causing my usage to be ten times that of an average household?

You definitely reading the right meter?

This isn't as dull as it sounds.

Positive, when I was on the phone to them today they asked for another reading and it still tallied up with the high calculations.
