Partly inspired by the Sports Personality thread, and partly because I was thinking about it at work today.

Someone you admire, somebody that performed well for your team/country, whatever the reason. But please give a reason. Who and why. Simple. There can be more than one, as well, past or present. Mine, in no particular order:

Tiger Woods

To me, the epitome of a professional sportsman. Modest, dignifed, dedicated and consistently on top of his game and dominant. Seems like a nice guy, arguably the greatest golfer of all time, and entertaining to watch.

Martin Johnson

Born in my hometown, which automatically scores him big points, and went on to lead England to the Rugby World Cup. Great leader on the field, again a very down to earth and modest guy.

Roger Federer

For much the same reasons as Tiger Woods. Incredible to watch, consistently dominant and one of the greatest to have played the sport. Never comes across as arrogant, but always like a gentleman.

The guy is literally brilliant to watch. I feel privileged being alive to watch this man.

Can't tackle for gooseberry fool, but my God what a wonderfully gifted footballer, and the perfect example of a guy not letting success get to his head. You'll only see him in the back pages for his football, not his personal life. A role model to every kid.

Image

The most remarkable person I've ever seen. Truly a man going past the limits of what should be humanly possible.

Roger Federer - Amazing player to watch and not arrogant in the slightest. A perfect gentleman.

David Seaman - For his 'tache and ponytail. Also his goalkeeping skillz.

Not the most gifted player, but someone who works his arse off every single game and has made the most of his ability. Add into this the immense amount of work he does for his charity and he just seems like a good all round guy.

Never really been into the olympics but these two just caught my imagination. Especially Bolt. That double gold double world record and the manner in which it was achieved was just an iconic moment in sport. Breathtaking!

Djimi Traore

Forget all those born with exceptional talent, Traore often plays like he doen't know what a football is but he managed to rise above all that and won the Champions League. A true inspiration for all those kids out there who struggle to make a five yard pass.

Look, if you're going to break the thread. Do it ultimately.

Not a Man Utd fan, but I think the man was a complete genius, and he won the hearts of all Coventry fans when he made his last appearance for Man Utd in the David Busst Testemonial game.

The threads about your favourite sportsperson, not the best. In a time when lots of footballers are happy to coast along picking up their paypackets, I enjoy watching someone who truly works hard and plays well for my team. Add in to the fact that he's not an arsehole and clearly doesn't think he's better than the fans just because he can kick a ball about, (as well as the important goals he's scored over the past year) and I believe he qualifies as one of my favourite sports people.

I am rather proud that I'll be able to tell my kids and my grandkids that I attended matches involving this man, and there's no question that he'll be remembered by the following generations of Celtic fans as one of the true Celtic greats. His impact was felt at Barcelona, too - even at almost 35 years old, he was able to make his impact felt in a team full of superstars and send his team to a Champions League victory. One of the best players of the last fifteen years, in my opinion, and certainly my favourite sportsman ever. :D
