I offer no opinion on whether that's a fair punishment, I have no idea of the effect it would have had on the student involved.

Fair enough, though I'd argue that wasn't actually the punishment as doled out by the law: what happened to her life was simply the ramifications that doing something like this can have, and anybody of reasonable intelligence ought to have foreseen these issues.

I wouldn't have sympathy with someone who had an affair and as a result lost their home, kids and family. Nor would I have sympathy with someone who, through an act of gross misconduct, lost their career. So cumulatively, I think you could have predicted everything that happened to that woman.
