Turkey isn't Europe, it's the start of Asia. I guess the UK is the worst then.

If Turkey isn't Europe then I guess neither is Russia. Part of Turkey is in Europe, and it certainly classifies as such. Regardless, worst human rights record in Europe isn't a prize we should really be coveting.

I don't know much about this guy. I should probably do a bit of reading.

To be honest, it looks like our current government are capable of being worse than Castro. I mean they're taking away human rights while destroying our education and health care systems.

Completely agree, just look at all the people trying desperately to escape the UK on rafts.

Keep drinking that Guardian propaganda, people.

I was out for pub lunch the other day, but instead of serving food all they served was Cuban cigars...

Turns out it was a Castro pub

Just as long as they don't try to desperately escape to England, eh Nick?

It's fascinating trying to watch Nick start a fight in here despite everyone's opinion about Castro being the same broadly negative one.

Hmm... the Cuban revolution succeeded in eradicating the criminal syndicates running their country, eliminating extreme poverty, vastly improving education (near 100% literacy rate, which many developed countries would love) and health (setting a model for all developing countries). Granted, there was suppression of free speech but considering that the forces of the old regime still trying to retake control as well as being effectively under siege by a superpower just off shore it is no wonder the revolutionaries were paranoid. Castro and his allies did both good and bad but you won't hear that from the media and certain elements of western politics which prefers to paint everything in a black and white narrative. Remember this man was best buds with Nelson Mandela, who according to the BBC was the second coming of Jesus, so I find focus on the misdeeds of one and the total airbrushing of the other kind of irritating. No one would blink at someone calling Mandela a hero despite him having done some pretty shading gooseberry fool.

My hope now is that America will continue to normalise relations with Cuba and in response the Cuban regime will feel able to extend more liberties to their citizens if they don't feel constantly threatened. Ideally this will mean Cubans and Cuban Americans will be able to travel and be able to reunite with relatives.

Yep I think Corbyn called it about right to be fair having read his full statement. Won't stop the press and media massively distorting what he said with select quotes and their odd slant on things.

Its also interesting to hear some right wingers with a complete misunderstanding of the situation in Cuba before Castro, which the US created and supported. It's hardly surprising really that Castro went the full on dictator route given the pressure he was put under internationally by the US. It doesn't excuse the human rights violations, but the US and other western countries can't absolve themselves of their responsibility either.

Meep sums it up well. Castro achieved some brilliant things. He also did some terrible things. These things were not done in isolation and without reason.

Regardless of people's opinions on the man and his life, I find the celebrations of his death tasteless and crass. Celebrating the death of anyone, no matter what they've done, just feels wrong. Look forward to a better future, reflect back on the events of the past, take a moment to remember those whose lives have been affected. But celebrating someone dying is unnecessary and senseless.

Castro is a figure who defies being simplified into soundbites, or reduced to fit a black and white morality. His life was undoubtedly important and worthy of reflection, and people should judge the man as the complex figure he was.
