Cuba's former president Fidel Castro, one of the world's longest-serving and most iconic leaders, has died aged 90.

His younger brother and successor as president Raul Castro announced the news on state television.

Castro toppled the government in 1959, introducing a Communist revolution. He defied the US for decades, surviving many assassination plots.

His supporters said he had given Cuba back to the people. Critics saw him as a dictator.

Hopefully while retaining the health care and education systems.

Can disagree with his politics but the man lived a hell of a life

Both of which are better than ours.

Maybe we should become a communist country too.

Hmm, I think we (UK) have the highest rated healthcare system in the world when everything is taken into consideration, Cuba have the best rated for a non-first world country IIRC.

Raul isn't half the man. It will be interesting to see what the future holds.

After naming my son after Che Guevara, I was always going to name my cat after Fidel.

Turns out the cat was a female though so we called her Martha.

And then we had a daughter and Fidel didn't sound right for her either.

Well... At least he isn't lying.

He did raise his people out of the crippling poverty that so many Caribbean island nations have been afflicted with. Granted, they didn't live well under him, but they were spared the extremes other counties have gone through.

Nothing to do with them being hardline communists then.

I wonder what Corbyn's opinions on North Korea are.

Well... shut up! :slol:

Anyway, the American embargo of Cuba shouldn't last much longer now, since the iconic "villain" who brought about it and the face of the revolution is now out of the picture forever. Plus, Trump, as we learned during the election, commissioned at least one exploratory business expedition to Cuba, so if he thinks his business will gain from the embargo ending, he'll almost certainly push for it to go. Another White House-Congress flash point in the making?

I can't find exactly what Corbyn said but the press are reporting that he praised him with some select quotes. I suspect it was a bit more nuanced than that. He will likely go down as a mixed character, a hero to many and a villain to others. It does make me a little uncomfortable to hear so many politicians citing human rights abuse when the US and UK are every bit as guilty of that over these last 50 odd years.

Yet in this country we're free to and very often exercise our views on human rights abuses. A freedom that's not afforded under regimes like Castro's.

I wouldn't go defending the UK's human rights record - I think the only country in Europe with a worse human rights record is Turkey.

Don't worry May will block Human Rights Watch and amnesty international soon so we would be able to see how bad this country gotten.

#ForAllHisFlaws was trending on Twitter earlier. Corbyn is the gift that keeps on giving. Unfortunately it stopped being funny about 6 months ago.
