When I used to host a weekly FIFA tournament we even had a rule that no jew goals were allowed just because that was the easiest way of explaining it to new players as everyone seemed to know what that was.

It's pretty pathetic having a tournament rule that people aren't allowed to score in a particular way, dude.

I heard it quite a bit during Uni, and I don't think I had heard of the alternative versions mentioned in here until now. Surprised that people are saying at work in a room with people they may not know though.

I admit I still say gay or retarded when describing things sometimes, I try not to but sometimes I say it without giving it any thought. Damn those days at school!

The increased normalisation of anti-Semitism over the past couple of years has been truly horrible. I will say no more, as this isn't a Politics thread. ;)

The thing I find odd is why people get offended on other people's behalf. Like if someone was taking the.piss out me or my kid for mental health conditions and some random person, with no mental illness pipe up about how it's wrong to say gooseberry fool, I'd be confused. strawberry float off people can fight their own battles.

Like "did you say JEW goal? what does that mean?" and if they explain it means 'dirty or underhanded', follow up with "but why 'Jew'? I don't get it".

The key thing is to not get angry or show you're offended. Be completely inquisitive in your tone. If they clam up, keep pressing like you're dying to know.

The result is hopefully that either they're forced to explain a cringeworthy South Park joke and are so embarrassed by themselves they don't do it anymore, or you lead them into doubling down with something so flagrantly racist that nobody would question you escalating the situation.

Sounds like a faggoty-ass way to address it tbh.

Did you say faggoty-ass?

Why shouldn't people who aren't directly affected/offended step in? Think about that video in the other thread of the racist bloke on the bus, screaming about immigrants. Would it be wrong for a white British person to step in there? If you can identify that someone's behaviour is unacceptable, does it really matter if it's targeted at you or not?

So if you're sat next to someone and he says "so this dumb ****** was walking across the street..." you'd just carry on enjoying the conversation? That wouldn't offend you?

It's not about people fighting their own battles (assuming certain people are even confident of fighting their own battles, I'm sure plenty of people would be too scared to speak up), it's about pointing out to people how inappropriate and offensive their words can be.

You raise good points. I dunno. I just find it odd when someone says something shitty and all of Twitter go nuts.

Maybe it's because some people can't fight their own battles?

It's taken a hell of a long time to get to a place where racially abusing people is unacceptable. The last thing most of us want is a return to the days when it was acceptable to use racial slurs.

You are also ignoring the possibility that people might be offended as the words might personally effect them. Not all Jews look "Jewish", not all disabilities are obvious, you can't tell somebody is gay just by looking, people can have a partner who is of a different race.

In the end it all comes down to basic decency and politeness. Don't be a dick and don't act surprised/offended if somebody calls you out for being a dick.

No, I get what you're saying. I wouldn't want racial slurs and things to become the norm, I dunno. Maybe I should think of it from varying perspectives other than my own. I can understand that sometimes people need to stand by their fellow human beings and show a united stance against hatred.

Sounds like you have a little trouble with empathy.

I don't mean that in a dickish (strawberry float you Lucien :x ) way either, genuinely it seems like you struggle to put yourself in other peoples shoes.

Preezy, if you're a middle manager surely this is exactly the type of thing you should be dealing with in the first instance?

I'm a project manager but I don't have any underlings, so not a "manager manager" if that makes sense. My lack of subordinates hampers my air of authority :(

Ah, I see. Fair enough.

Did you raise it with your manager in the end?
