I would deal with it and discipline them all as appropriate. But I am HR so I can do that.

I'd raise it with your Line Manager. Without evidence (and you will be 1 vs many) nothing significant will happen but I think you just want a behaviour change so that is no bad thing. Ideal resolution is a quiet word with each (or a mass email sent centrally about comments heard in the break area, but less effective) which stops the behaviour. If it happens thereafter, evidence and escalate.

I'd never heard that term before, that's pretty racist. Tough one if it's at work though, not sure how I'd handle it.

I'm a project manager but I don't have any underlings, so not a "manager manager" if that makes sense. My lack of subordinates hampers my air of authority :(

Ah, I see. Fair enough.

Did you raise it with your manager in the end?

She wasn't in but I will be speaking to her tomorrow, going to suggest a blanket communication where "someone" has overheard the phrase being used, so it stays anonymous and everyone still gets the message.

Glad to see everyone else thinks it's disgraceful and not just me being a sensitive Simon.

it might be because i visited a church last week that had 80,000 names on the walls of Jews from Prague who died in the Holocaust, but calling a 'cheap' goal a Jew goal is so out of order id call them out on it immediately and probably get in trouble :|

Fox is generally accepted as the strongest character in Melee.

*bump and update*

So this whole "jew goal" thing died down at work as less people were playing FIFA on their lunch breaks, and it seemed to be a thing of the past, but on my lunch today there were a couple of guys playing and one of them scored a "sweaty/jew" goal and the other player started mouthing off quite enthusiastically that he was a "strawberry floating jew" and "that was so jewish you jew banana split". The guy doing the name-calling is an Albanian (via Wigan, so quite the accent :slol: ), nice guy and I get on with him but is there maybe a cultural thing I'm missing? Are Albanians notoriously anti-semitic? The guy being abused completely laughed it off and carried on playing as normal, like being called a jew banana split was a completely normal and acceptable thing to be called at work. Both guys are about 25/26 so it's not like they're a couple of teenagers dicking about. It was mental.

I had my headphones on listening to the Parapod and I could hear this guy mouthing off in a canteen with about 5 or 6 other people sat eating their lunch or looking at their phones. No-one batted an eyelid. Do people just not care? It was really quite shocking, but as with before I didn't say anything, didn't want to call out a colleague and potentially cause aggro or make a scene, but now I'm really considering reporting the guy.

Thought I'd share this with you all as I was lost for words and have to get it off my chest (again).

Yeah I agree with that. If you get on with him then have a quiet word first.

You could frame it as though you're trying to stop him from getting into trouble, rather than you 'telling him off' about it yourself. Kind of like "hey, just in case anybody hears you saying that, it might be worth toning down the anti-semitism…" rather than "that's wrong, stop doing it". Then you're more a mate trying to help him rather than someone having a go at him. He sounds like a bit of a twat though, so maybe you should report him.

Ok then, leave an anonymous note on his desk warning him that he will be reported if he is ever racist again.

I'd go with the strategy someone suggested a few pages back and 'innocently' ask him what he means by using the word. Get him to explain it out loud and see if he doesn't cringe hard enough to ensure it doesn't happen again.

FFS Preezy :fp:

Man up and tell them it's unacceptable - firmly. You don't even have to make a big deal - just a firm "No, let's use that language" and go back to your podcast.

Or report them to HR.

I think you need to be diplomatic at first. Does your company have customers or suppliers that visit, because I would frame it around that and just point out that you don't always know who is around and who would take offence.

If they get aggressive or stand offish with you, you should then double down and ask them to stop or your will report it. I think that's more than fair warning.

At my company that would be a straight forward sackable offence, so the fact you were warning them is being more than generous to them. I'm pretty sure a lot of people wouldnt even give the guy a chance and just report it which is understandable, but it's not easy to be a whistle blower.

The feigning innocence idea is also good, but will probably only work if you know them well.

Just put a sign up on the wall banning that term. It'll be anonymous so your fragile meekness will not be exposed. ;)
