PostFIFA and the Jew Goal
by Preezy » Wed Jun 28, 2017 12:25 pm

So in the breakroom in my office we have a PS4 set up with the latest FIFA that guys play on their lunch breaks. I tend not to participate as I’m not very good at PvP football but I do take my lunches in the breakroom and so am regularly exposed to guys playing FIFA against each other. Anyway, I wanted to share what I’ve noticed happen with startling regularity – the use of the term “Jew goal”.

For those who aren’t familiar, a “Jew goal” is when a player will score what is considered to be a cheap, unworthy goal (usually by drawing defenders across the pitch only to then pass the ball across the goal to a spare man for an easy tap in). This is for some reason a very bad thing (despite being a perfectly acceptable method of scoring) and usually results in all manner of abuse from the conceding player (and other spectators), but what’s becoming increasingly common is how casually people will say something like “can’t believe you Jewed it” or “that was a classic Jew goal” or “you filthy Jew”. This is in a work office in a breakroom that can house maybe 20 people at a time, from all levels of the company – call centre to boardroom… and no one bats an eye. It’s almost as if they don’t realise what they’re saying and that “Jew” doesn't have mean anything and is just a filler word.

Now, I’m not Jewish (not that you have to be to get offended by stuff like this) but this really gets my back up, to the point where I’ve nearly said something but held back at the last minute for fear of being ostracised.

What should I do? Has anyone else come across this kind of thing? I’m pretty sure it’s not just isolated to my particular office, maybe some of you FIFA/PES players even use the term yourselves and don’t realise what you’re actually saying?

You should definitely bring it to someone's attention.

Go to HR, I was involved in a similar incident with a board game club I ran in a previous office and based on what I saw there its best to get it stopped sooner rather than later. In my case some lads were making jokes involving the word rape, not making fun of rape I should stress but they were giving each other nicknames with rape or rapey in the title, stupid stuff but I didnt take much notice of it, it was crass but they werent aiming it at anyone and they dropped it after a few minutes.

A couple of days later I got an email saying that a complaint had been received and the individuals in question were warned about making such comments in the office anymore and if it continued to escalate it blah blah blah.

The main thing here is the environment, if theyre at home with friends then go nuts but in an office it can be offensive and someone could be actually very offended by it and afraid to speak up.

What an odd term. Can't say I've heard of it before. Surprising if there are senior staff there and nobody's said anything or no kind of mass communication has been sent out.

This is all Preezy’s own fault for accepting the job at UKIP headquarters.

I've only ever heard it referred to as "the noob move" as it's quite a cheap way of scoring.

Get 'em all reprimanded, preez.

Less competition then

I've heard the term, it's pretty common.

Go to HR and raise your concerns. They'll be keen to put a stop to it.

The commute to the volcano is a ball-ache, I admit.

This was how I used to know it, but now I never hear it called this.

We don't really have an HR department (quite a small company ~70 employees), it's just a single office with regular drone staff (most of the offenders in this instance), mid-management (me) and then senior managers/directors.

You must have 1 person responsible for HR at least in a 70 employee company surely?

Pass back goal - usually referred to as a scum goal but I know people who call it a Jew goal. Doesn't really bother me, and is always in an environment with friends rather than colleagues, but I can see why others would be offended. Wouldn't tolerate it in a work environment.

In the same situation, I'd ask them what they're saying, in a non-confrontational way. Like you don't understand.

Like "did you say JEW goal? what does that mean?" and if they explain it means 'dirty or underhanded', follow up with "but why 'Jew'? I don't get it".

The key thing is to not get angry or show you're offended. Be completely inquisitive in your tone. If they clam up, keep pressing like you're dying to know.

The result is hopefully that either they're forced to explain a cringeworthy South Park joke and are so embarrassed by themselves they don't do it anymore, or you lead them into doubling down with something so flagrantly racist that nobody would question you escalating the situation.

If you have nobody to report it to, then the only solution is to dress up in a full Hasidic Jew outfit and then sit there glaring at them during break times.

Yeah I guess our operations director deals with all that stuff, but she's a right baggage and would probably side with them :dread:

This.

If you don't have a HR dept - depending on how far up in management you are you might want to meet with the offenders individually yourself and inform them? Otherwise inform your director(s).

To be more serious, it is absolutely not acceptable for people to be saying that sort of thing. Imagine if they were calling it a “n****r goal” or a “p**i” goal?

There must be somebody you can report it to?

Excellent idea, thanks jiggles.

I'll speak to my direct line manager, she's a company director so will probably take this super seriously.

I came on here to discuss a colleague who watches conspiracy videos and I thought this thread was about a new Illuminati plot
Dual wrote:Don't be a grass Preezy. Just a bit of banter.

Disappointing Dual, the number one ironic satirical answer to people offended by derogatory terms in common parlance is "Stop being gay you mong..."

If this is rife in the staff room someone needs to say something. Back in the day all this "you're so gay" and "you're a mong" type stuff was just a lark because "nobody means it obviously". Look where that's got us - horrible bigotry obfuscated by teh lulz, but "you can't say anything in this country nowadays!" I accept I may have been complicit in this lazy irony in my youth like many of us probably were, but I have certainly seen the error of my ways.

Someone banged out the word Chinky in my work the other week. Her tone wasn't derogatory (apparently the food at that restaurant is pretty good), but like Moggy said, it makes you wonder what she calls a newsagent. I accept it is hard to take a stand against it (I didn't on that occasion as it has only happened once) but it can't be allowed to fester and take root. If a patient heard that there would be outrage.

I've never heard of that term, ridiculously racist.
