Good picks Buff :)

Only seen one of them and will probably watch the other two anyway regardless which film wins.

Can you put me in but exclude me from being in the draw to pick films until I catch up with at least 75% of the stuff from last year's club?

The Killing Fields was the only one I hadn't watched and I was in the mood for it. Good selection.

I enjoyed this movie, it was a nice change of pace to see how the lives of people who were not that important or powerful get treated in events which they have no control over. I also enjoyed the fact that the story became about Dith Pran halfway through, and didn't just become about Sydney's tale of saving him.

The only reason this doesn't score higher is that there is not much character development in the first half of the movie, and not even that much in the second half when there is so much call for it. Some of the emotions the film was trying to convey felt rushed and almost out of place at times. I found it was difficult to empathise with characters who we were just being told to like and not letting us develop our own view of them. Also the soundtrack was just bizarre.

All things considered, it is still a very strong piece of British cinema.

The Killing Fields - 7/10

Watched The Guest tonight even though it wasn't voted in. Its not a half bad movie even if it is full of tropes. We have the loser son who is smart but gets picked on in school and The Guest helps him take care of the bullies. The daughter who is dating a loser drug dealer but can't see how bad it is. The father gets denied a promotion at work which he struggles with and I could go on.

Although The Guest is clichéd in many ways it does deliver on its promise to be an action-thriller as things get pretty intense later in the movie. The movie knows what it needs to be and at times is almost self aware of its own genre (the end scene could almost be described as comical). While this movie will never win any awards, it is worth a watch as it knows exactly what you want to see from this film and it delivers it well.

The Guest - 6/10

The Killing Fields.

Not bad. I did find it a bit different from the usual Hollywood "true stories" fare, as it focus on the people who caught in the events, instead of casting a spotlight on star of the film I thought. Not a film that I would recommend watching when feeling depressed though!

The Killing Fields - 9/10

Found the film incredibly engrossing. This is a period in history I knew very little about. I'd heard of the Khmer Rouge before but never really knew too much about the struggles of Cambodia. The cast is great especially Ngor who really comes into his own from the French embassy onwards. Also interesting to see this was Bruce Robinson's first major project as a writer.

I loved this film a lot. Great choice and film to start off the 2015 club with.

Has it been two weeks already?

I started watching The Killing Fields but it's a very long film and I put it on too late, then fell asleep about 30 mins in
It does really interest me though so I need to leave it until the weekend and give it my full attention.
