One of my favourite films is When the Wind Blows an animated film by the same team that did the Snowman about an elderly couple who survive WW3 but suffer from radiation and confusion.

It's really well done and in no way over dramatic. It's also very very British with Tea being served even after the apocalypse and the entire thing is extremely emotional.
