Yup, thoroughly sold on this. I've just gotten back from the Native Indian bird-folk's camp and am really enjoying mt time. I can see why it was so popular at the time; the gambit system is genius and the characters are all top notch (apart from Vaan and Penelo who are empty vessels). The fast forward is a life saver though, god knows how many more hours it would have taken to get to where I am if it weren't there (I'm at about 11 hours playtime at the mo)

It is absolutely "FF does Star Wars" though.

Finally caught up to where I dropped off on the PS2 version, just after the Grand Crystal. Also filled out everyone's boards more or less. Pretty much just the extra gambit slots to buy, then I'll get round to setting them up better than just "Attack leader's target". Not sure if I prefer the job system in Zodiac or the original license board. It lets everyone fall into a niche better, but the level of overlap at play means the niche isn't that specialised anyway.

A shame there's no [FOE] Flying > [Attack Bow/Gun/Crossbow] or [Swap places with range weapon equipped Ally] gambit.

Right?! I got the SW feels from the opening cinematic but many times more so when seeing Fran and Balthier pilot their ship. That was straight up Han and Chewie homage.

Unless something goes spectacularly wrong before the end, I think I'm gonna have to reorder my FF faves list.

I also went into this blind and so can't even begin to imagine how much of a balls up I made of all the job boards :slol:

I might have looked online for advice on that score. :shifty: What did you go for in the end?

I actually bought the Prima guide for this. Pretty naff purchase really. Aside from some basic information, mainly concerning the license boards, the guide is really, really gooseberry fool. I've got the guide for the PS2 version as well and pretty much all of it still applies and the detail is faaaar superior.

Put about 30 hours in so far and I'm over levelled for where I am in the story (just visited Mt. Bur Omisace) but I'm enjoying it so much. I really do think the Zodiac system adds much more to the game.

This is so true. I got the online PDF version of the new guide as it was far cheaper, but the only reason its useful compared to the far superior PS2 guide book is because they changed all the treasure chest locations and contents.

I wish I'd looked too but I honestly didn't think the game would hook me as it has :fp: The jobs themselves aren't too bad (I only really regret a few of the secondary ones), but I think I may have messed up a little by giving the first two Espers to Ashe.

Vaan = Monk + Shikari (Good tank but I regret his secondary pick)
Balth = Machinist + Red Battlemage (No complaints)
Fran = Archer + Foebreaker (Really happy with both of Fran's; good primary, decent back up tank and brings heals to the game as well. Wish she had a few more block chance upgrades for Foebreaker. Probably my favourite character.)
Basch = Bushi + Time Battlemage (I wish he had more survivability as primary)
Ashe = White Mage + Knight (Back up healer)
Penelo = White Mage + Black Mage (Primary heals because she has better secondary than Ashe)

Currently after the third Esper.

I ended up running something very similar:

Vaan: Monk/Shikari- primary tank with insane HP, good range of elemental weapons, gets shields etc. Will look more into the damage formulas now to see what's better as a weapon and see where it leaves us.

Basch: Knight/Uluan- the one I regret the most. The amount of overlap basically just turned him into a knight with access to spears. Still an absolute powerhouse, though, frequently hitting for twice as much as all the other losers.

Penelo: White Mage/Time Mage- gave her a crossbow to keep her out of the fray since even with Bubble she's got way less HP than average. She's basically a walking holy nuke, healing even Vaan to full with minimal MP use. The time/green magic support is also super useful.

B-team for if we need more specialised abilities when just hitting it with swords doesn't do it.

Balthier: Archer/Foebreaker- I prefer him as a Foebreaker because he can match Basch in damage (albeit with more variation) and can dismantle enemies stats if needed, archer was just to give him more ranged options, mainly.

Fran: Red Mage/Machinist- holy gooseberry fool Red Mage is the best class in the game (as it always is). With Esper use it basically becomes a Red Sage with access to all the major spells anyway. Good defense with shields, good attack with maces feeding off magic power. So strong. Holy gooseberry fool Machinist is worthless.

Ashe: Black Mage/Bushi- I think Katanas run off magical damage so this gives her great coverage for everything. Nothing more to say, really.

Had Fran/Balthier as MCH/ARC rather than ARC/MCH because if I remember correctly they have horrible animation lock on their attacks which lowers their DPS. But in the end I use axes/maces over guns/bows if possible.

I don't know if I'm overlevelled since I've been doing all the hunts I can, or I'm just a powerhouse or whatever, but generally I can get away with just autoing everything down at x4 speed with the occasional Decoy/Curaga going out on Vaan.

Penelo is the only one I've set up habits for just because it's annoying manual giving Vaan a third party provoke.

If I was running it again I think I'd happily just double or even triple up on some jobs now that I've seen which ones I never use.

I just copied one from Gamefaqs as I couldn't be bothered with the theorycrafting myself. Not optimal, as I guess an optimal build doesn't use every single job, but I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Vaan - Shikari/Foebreaker
Balthier - Machinist/Uhlan
Fran - Archer/Red Battlemage
Basch - Knight/Bushi
Ashe - White Mage/Time Battlemage
Penelo - Black Mage/Monk

Happy with the setup story wise as the jobs generally make sense with what I had each of them doing in the original.

Not completely sold on Ashe's combination, the big weakness being lack of HP. Everyone else either gets Light Armour or licenses that boost HP but Ashe will always be a bit squishy. It also remains to be seen whether she will have enough time/gambit to cast all the spells. Crossbows have been a god send though so far.

As for the rest I'm pretty happy, so much synergy between the jobs AND on the licence boards. Take Basch as an example. A late game weapon for the Knight is locked behind an Esper, along with a HP Boost. That HP Boost is also available on the Bushi board behind a quickening, so no need to give Basch the Esper. That Esper could now be given to Penelo, giving her access to high level White Magic. The Bushi also gets access to armour which will boost the damage of the late game weapon.

My biggest gripe about Basch (when he's DPS tanking :fp:) got solved soon after making that last post  I found (either already in my equipment, or as a drop during that session's play) a Bubble Belt (or something) which doubles the wearer's HP! So now I'm even more over levelled than I was before. :toot: :P

Oh and, I managed to get to the low 40s in Trial Mode earlier. Straight up hit a wall when I faced off against these freaky Storm Troopers-esque insectoid mobs, though. (Both teams, plus guest, got wiped within seconds of one another *ouch*)

Thinking about it, not sure if +2 are needed. Not right now anyway. I mean, tank I prefer to have Bubble Belt's x2 HP effect, and half MP cost ring on healer. Maybe worth grinding just to swap in and quickly out again for particular section of more difficult encounters. Hmmm.

Nice pickup!

Never been quite too sure about it myself either. Great utility item but most of the time I'd want those Bubble Belts going.

I spent bloomin' ages earlier trying to get an item drop (White Incense). Had to get a chain of 80+ to get two of them when there is a 10% chance of a drop. Don't even need them yet but figured best to do it now while I'm in the area.

Apparently I'm good to head into the final dungeon. Not sure if I want to do more clear up now or after I beat the game since I'm going to want to try and do Yiazmat and Omega, which will probably require a good deal of grinding out gear.

I'm currently in that light house tower and losing the will to live

I unlocked 4 doors by activating pedestals which then caused spinning top things to fly out and cancel my ability to use magic, weapons, etc, but then when I entered the first room (de-buff for it being knowledge related) I didn't see much different. Maybe the mini map was missing? I have no idea what I'm doing, but the way out of that map and each subsequent related map seems to be the corridor which leads up. So yeah, I'm following those and hoping I haven't ballsed up massively by activating all 4 pedestals but only going through one of the doors.

Still enjoying it though!

You can only activate one at a time, using one will cancel out the last one you used. You've not messed up.

The knowledge one removes your mini-map, which is useless on the PS4 remaster anyway as you have a far better map still available by pressing R3.

:slol: Careful what you ask for, etc.

My favourite bit was constantly choosing the wrong colours and ending up being punished by the undead 'locks and soldiers and the 2 litch-a-likes. That was fuuuun :dread: At least they dropped what read like good loot.

Beat the final boss on first attempt :toot: Without a whole host of high level white magics :toot: :fp: (Namely Protectga. Had I been without Curaja it'd have been game over.)
