1UP Cover Story

Story:
The world of Final Fantasy 13 is split into two very different parts. One part is a floating, mechanical city called Cocoon, which has also been described as a space colony. Cocoon is home to a few million people. These people of Cocoon are frightened of the other part of the world which is outside of the city, a place called Pulse.

Anyone who comes into contact with Pulse are believed to be part of a plot to invade Cocoon. These people are banished from the protection of the city by the “holy” government and their army. The people in black/blue clothes on the train in the E3 2006 trailer were being quarantined because they had come into contact with Pulse.

In the city of Cocoon, the people are protected by crystals and so can live peacefully. The crystals can create machines and living creatures. The city is even known to have been created by a Crystal.

The director of Final Fantasy 13, Motome Toriyama, has said the relationship between Cocoon and Pulse can be thought of as this: First, there was Pulse, a dangerous world where people reside under the fear of monster attack. Cocoon was made when the crystals considered what would be an appropriate living space for people forced to reside in the world of Pulse.

The crystal has chosen Lightning to bring an end to the world. When she was chosen she became an enemy of the Human Race and was believed to bring destruction to the world.

Characters:

Image

Lightning
The main character of Final Fantasy XIII and her name is actually a sham. "Lightning" is but a mask for her real name, and is the code name she goes by to keep her true identity off the records.

She does not like to talk about herself or her past but remains mentally and physically strong and independent. Lightning is well toned and quite the acrobat, as seen in the trailer, and not that surprisingly (based on her portrayal in the trailer) is not sweet. Square Enix has compared her to a noble soldier, as she is one strict gal.

Snow
Snow, formerly known as Mr. 33cm for the size of his boots, is said to be big enough to carry two people at once, and run at same time.

He's seen in the trailer saving Lightning from enemy troops as he pulls up on his Shiva motorcycle. He's described as having a wild fighting style, but in the trailer he simply looks to be firing an enemy gun.

Fang
The only known fact about this character is that she is a L'Cie, of which nothing is known what even that means really. She wears tribal-esque clothing and is seen in Pulse.

Sazh
Sazh has known Lightning since they were both serving in the Coocoon army. He is said to be a very vocal character, but is not afraid to show his soft side as he is emotional and sympathetic. He has a pet chicobo, which lives in his afro for safe keeping.

Sazh uses two handguns for battle, but can also use his hands if he is not equiped with any guns

Hope Estheim
Hope Estheim is a fourteen year old boy who lived a peaceful life in Cocoon, until he was banished to Pulse for reasons unknown. Journeying with his mother, their transport to Pulse was interrupted by the battle on Hanged Edge. His mother, under Snow's request, joined the battle, and lost her life in the process.

Hope now blames Snow for the loss of his mother, and directs all his sadness and anger towards him.

Hope's speech is usually quite reserved, but with the duress of travelling with Lightning and becoming a l'Cie, he sometimes lets his emotions get the better of him and has outbursts of frustration or anger.

In battle, Hope uses dual weapons which can best be described as futuristic boomerangs

Lebreau
Lebreau is a member of Team Nora, and she uses a rifle as her main weapon. She also acts as healer during battles. Character designer Nao Ikeda explains why she dresses the way she does, and it is because Team Nora's main base is on a beach, and so as a result, her design was based off of volleyball players.

Sereh Farron
Not very much is known about this character, except that she is engaged to Snow and is the younger sister of Lightning.

Can I say that the first hour is possibly the most boring and barely interactive first hour of a game ever?

I was going to say this

He was praising White Knight so maybe he has the taste for JRPGs?

Nah. I'm sure WK is better.

I fancy more PS3 JRPG games. At the mo I have Star Ocean, Eternal Sonata and WK.

This or Heavy Rain to buy first? If I had the cash or the games to trade I'd get both, sadly I have neither. I need a pay rise. :x

I'm still buying this but probably not on day one as I'll just kick myself if I do buy it and see it £10-15 cheaper a few months later.

Besides I've still got plenty of backlog to get through, with Bayonetta, Darksiders, Assasins Creed II and even Mass Effect (so I can play Mass Effect 2) all still to play. Couple those with finishing off Dead Space and I'm pretty busy. :x

Not played FF in ages and so I really want to get this, but the sexual ambiguity of the main character is really putting me off, ditto Snow's Gary Nevillesque attempts at growing a beard.

I'm sure she's a she, but I like my characters a little more clearly defined than how recent FF games have portrayed theirs.
