Thought I would try the PC version of this. Holy smokes what a convoluted sign up process. I played the opening yesterday after it took ages to install through the SE client. Went to launch it just now and now it wants another 8GB patch. Soooo not a game for a quick session is it?

That's pretty much every big MMO though. Big patches aren't a daily occurance, but when they hit they really hit.

The convoluted sign up process and account management is just the typical Japanese game dev not really 'getting' online systems ala Nintendo.

MMOs are updated pretty frequently... to be fair, I'd expect a hefty download the first time you play one and you're always gonna have an account setup process. Once you've done it, things run pretty smoothly.

Square-Enix have done a fantastic job with the setup on PS4. The subscription process works outside of PSN - i.e. so you get the same offers and deals as on the PC version - and you don't need to sign-up to PS Plus to play. The icing on the cake is that the game offers cross-platform play, with PS4 players able to play alongside PC players. I'd argue that this is a great example of how to do online play extremely well!

So I've been playing this with my fiancee and it's pretty damn good. She's in the living room on the PS4 and I've been playing in the dining room on the PC. Still fairly early on as we're still in our starting "country" (Gridania) but we've just defended the Guardian Tree from the Ixal and defeated the Black Mage so the plot is moving along nicely.

I've been playing as a Conjurer while she's an Archer. I wouldn't normally stick with a healer class, but it's the first MMO she's played so I wanted to make things as simple as possible for her. Means I can still do some damage while keeping her alive as much as possible.

Is there anyone else still playing this on here as I'd like to do some of the bigger group stuff, ideally with people who aren't DPS obsessed wankers who give you grief for not understanding every single element of the game.

EDIT: Oh and it's in the Steam sale at the moment.

It's great that you guys are having fun with this, Cheeky. I really like the game, but:

a) I haven't played it for some time now, and
b) There are so many mechanics in the game that I struggle to get a grip on what to do and how to play!

I believe that Seven still plays regularly and Met always seems to know a lot about the game, too. This is a game that I want to get into... I'll have to set aside time and effort to return to it.

Yeah there's a lot to it. Feel like we've only just scratched the surface so far. Playing it quite casually to be honest as I don't see us doing any high-level raids or anything like that. Quite happy to work through the story line and see where it goes.

I'm not sure how available I'll be, as I work shifts so could be around any time from afternoons to stupid o'clock, but I'll happily answer any questions I'm able to. And you don't have to worry too much about high end stuff yet: there's plenty of story and dungeons between now and the first raids.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of vertical progression there's little reason to go back and do previous high-level 8-man trials/raids, but if your goal is to catch up on the story and then look into what's there that shouldn't be too much of a problem. They recently added a daily reward to running 24-man and story focused 8-man raids so they're probably going to be good for while when you get there.

What server do you play on?

Cheers Met.

We're just feeling our way through it as we go. I've got a little MMO experience, but I've never really played more than a handful of hours in them so it's new to both of us and we're enjoying it so far.

We're on Omega (I think).

A new FF XIV app has been launched today for iOS and Android. I've only had a quick look but it seems interesting; you can check out your character appearance and stats as well as buy and sell items - and chat to friends.

I belive that the app only allows one character to be used, though - which is fine for me but I know that some of you (Seven?) have several characters!

Anyway, it's worth a look.

Nice. We've drifted away from it a little over the past few weeks, but I've been itching to get back to it. Progressing nicely and the world has opened up significantly

Done a few dungeons now and she's getting more used to having a "role" to play when we have to team up with other players. I split away from my Conjurer for a while and levelled up an Arcanist to around 24-25, but it meant waiting for other players to get into dungeons. When I switched back to Conjurer we get straight in. I guess there's a shortage of healer characters compared to the other classes.

I've just started playing again after a break of maybe a year or more. I really enjoy the game but I struggle to get to grips with the combat controls. Even doing the training (I'm a DPS / mage character at level 18) I find it hard to get through the exercises  :fp: .

I've just logged on now and am gonna take my time getting back into it.

I've just (re)completed the Hall of the Novice (DPS) training! Feels good, man :-) . It was a tough challenge!

Still not sure about the magic / weapons that I have, though. Gonna take a look at them and work out how to arrange them on the attack menus.

That't be neat, CD. I met Seven in-game ages ago, but I think we're on different servers now.

I'm enjoying getting back into this. I'm doing some simple missions in the Lima Lominsa (or whatever it's called!) area. Example: A lady is just telling me that "You seem to be the type who enjoys being accosted for menial tasks" .

She's probably got a Wasp hive she needs you to blu-tac shut.

The app is pretty horrible to tell truth. It's getting low reviews and deservingly so.

But yeah, back on this again. That didn't take long but my mental health isn't too bad, enjoying it quite a little but I'll have to make sure I don't force myself to play it all time... I know it's common sense but I didn't realise I was doing it at times :X

On balmungAisbraena I managed to get Dark Knight to 70, which means almost every class is 70 -- only one left to get to 70, and that's Paladin (lv61). That being said I'm not rushing and taking my time as I'm also playing on Louisoix under same name/look maining astrologan when levelling black mage for fun. I got feeling ill want to 70 everything on Louisoix too...

Yeah, it is very basic. Apparently they're looking to enhance it once connectivity and access speed has been confirmed
but it doesn't exactly give a great first impression. I hope it is swiftly improved!

Good to hear that you're playing again, dude! I put a little more time in last night and got to grip some with the missions again. I had forgotten nearly everything about the game so it has been a case of learning again. I completed some simple tasks last night and felt good about that :-). The company that I joined over a year ago is still around and they said hello when I logged on; they are mostly "top tier" players but they are welcoming to novices  .
