Astrologian went from being a joke to being terrifying: Cards got a significant buff (AoE range increase, damage/defense boosts doubled); Nocturnal shields got a boost in strength and now block 170% of damage healed on single targets, 150% of party; card draw lasts twice as long and redraw has a lower cooldowns so you can theoretically can a redraw on every attempt to mitigate RNG; Celestial Opposition doubles the duration of the buff extension; basic benefic has a chance to proc a guaranteed crit benefic II instead of just an instant cast.

It didn't even need half that many to become competitive with the others.

I play this game and I still didn't understand most of that.

Tl;Dr background- Astrologian wasn't taken seriously due to being a weaker hybrid of Scholar (with Nocturnal stance shields) and White Mage (with Diurnal stance regens). Even then the speed boost and regen of Diurnal overpowered the power boost and shields of Nocturnal. The only thing to let them stand alone was the card system which provides various buffs like 10% attack/def boost, resource regen aids, and hastes.

People didn't like the RNG aspect of the cards.

In response Square increased the power of Nocturnal Sect so, while it's still weaker than Scholar it's now 170% protection to 180 (iirc) as opposed to 140/180.

But they didn't stop.

They changed the att/def boosting cards from 10% to 20%, which nobody was asking for, as well as increasing the AoE modifying ability for the cards from 15y to 20y. They then increased the time you can hold cards without using them and increased the frequency you can reshuffle to mitigate RNG and bad draws, which is fair enough, though now you can attempt a redraw every time if you're careful with your timing.

They also have an ability called Celestial Opposition which increased the duration of buffs you cast on people by 5 seconds, allowing for maybe 2 more ticks of regen or 2 more attacks under the damage boost. This has been upped to 10 seconds to get one more tick or 2 more attacks on top of the current version.

Basically they turned everything up and, while we'll wait and see how it settles, theoryceafters are anticipating they've gone too far in the other direction.

Personally, I'd be fine with the changes if they left the card effects alone as that was never where the problem was. A 1 minute 20 second 10% damage boost (or 50s of 20%) on a DPS was already crazy. Now you can get 1m 25s of 20% standard. Enhanced balance is going to be a 40% damage boost.

There's a bunch of end-game like new trials and a story extension, but there's still a fair bit they add throughout the game, though it's mainly quality if life stuff like easier access to services.

If you don't mind reading through the War and Peace of patch notes here's the full release: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone ... 65b70097a6

Yoshi also came on stage wearing a Scarlet Witch top, similar to how he wore a Batman top to tease Dark Knight. So, unless there's a massive ruse going on, Red mage all but confirmed.

Current info we got from the keynote earlier, spoilered for length, I guess:

-Stormblood will explore Ala Mhigo
-Main focus is to regain control of Ala Mhigo from the Garlean Empire
-20 years have passed since Garleans have had control
-Main atagonist to be Zenos Yae Galvus, XIIth Legion Legatus and de facto ruler of Ala Mhigo
-Woman depicted in trailer to potentially be revealed in future 3.X patch
-Warrior of Light's main job in 4.0 is Monk (akin to DRG for 3.0)
-Area shown in teaser trailer is Rhalgr's Reach, the HQ of Ala Migho's main resistance.
-Multiple new jobs to be discussed at future date
-Yoshi-P wore a t-shirt of Marvel's Scarlet Witch, said that was the only hint he'd give at this time
-New Level Cap: 70 (for all classes)
-More actions for each job to go with new cap
-Revamped battle system to go with new actions
-Additional Skill System to be overhauled, with skills shared by roles instead of jobs, and can choose from shared role ability options
-Reassessment of unused/ineffective actions
-Example used is Dragoon's Blood of the Dragon buff, where in 4.0 an icon/gauge showing how much time is left will be better visible on screen so players aren't just staring at the current icon
-New Areas to be introduced, comparable in size to Heavensward areas
-Stormblood will be a full standalone game's worth of content
-New Primals to be introduced, including known names and all-new original-to-FF14 ones.
-New Dungeons to be introduced with new battle and dungeon concepts to be introduced
-High-End Raids to also be added, with possibility of different story depending on difficulty, with normal on odd patches, savage on even (NOTE: I may have transcribed this backwards. Please look forward to more information on it).
-New Alliance Raids to be added. Big news, but will wait until Tokyo Fan Fest, but will be, "very, very Final Fantasy"
-Expanded form of Exploration to be introduced: The Forbidden Land of Eureka (they really like FF3!), something different from Diadem and will expand its own entire area, unique to Stormblood. There might even be Notorious Monsters that only appear once every 72 hours.
-Eureka may also be used for next set of high-end weapons, akin to Relic/Anima, rather than upgrades in "normal areas."
-New Gear and Recipes, including winners of Fan's Gear Design Contest
-Item Inventory Exansion (this got the biggest cheers so far), looking to increase "as much as humanly possible." There is uncertainty in how this will be implemented due to the server needs, and it will be addressed in a future Live Letter
-A 4th Residential Area to be added. Where? "Sorry, can't tell ya."
-In-game footage of new areas shown
-Screenshots now being shown of new areas
-Indications are that Ala Mhigo is crossed via a wall in The Black Shroud, which will be shown in Patch 3.5. Yoshi joked that Dragoon Jump won't work to scale the wall, but that The Warrior of Light has a lot of practice falling off of things.
-Ala Mhigo will not be just deserts and wasteland. Forests are also part of it.
-All areas of 4.0 will be accessible by flying mounts, but there was an indication that it will again by quest-based like in 3.0. At groans from the audience, Yoshi said it will be easier than Moogle Quests.
-Bunch of art, including the new Garlean dude.

Also some spec changes that you guys might want to look at to be safe. They're still keeping it potato level, by the looks of it, but the limiter that is the PS3 has been removed.

1) Changes to Windows version Minimum Specs requirements. Current minimum specs are geared towards components you can't even buy anymore. So, for the best gaming experience possible, they've decided to raise their minimum specs. "If possible, maybe upgrade to 64-bit OS" but they will still support 32-bit. They just suggest 64-bit will be best gaming experience.
2) End of PlayStation 3 support. This got the second biggest cheers. They've been examining numbers and have seen a large migration of PS3 to PS4 so they have decided it is the right time to end PS3 support. To show appreciation to their PS3 fans that helped them get to where they are now, there will be a special FREE PS3 to PS4 upgrade campaign.

All in, your general stuff that people expected.

Still not sure how Red Mage would work in the FFXIV setting, though. That said, we have no idea how the battle system is getting revamped, so maybe that will streamline things, but as of now everything has such a specific niche to it that a Red mage would either end up being a pre-buff Astrologian that tries to be many things and falls short at them all (as is the true nature of Red Mage) which would be pointless as it's a waste of a party slot, or a Warrior/Scholar that does multiple things to such a high proficiency that you're retarded to take anything over them if given the choice.

Thinking on it after people initially thought it was a dancer in the trailer (which seems REALLY DPS heavy), rather than a monk which makes more sense, I tried to piece together how a healer Red Mage would work. I always imagined that, should a RDM be added, it would be a melee DPS with heavy support abilities, like Bard, using both MP and TP resources to buff people. But if the DPS slot is somehow taken by dancer it could fit in as healer, with a heavy skew to DPS. Kind of like Kurubu from Lost City of Amdapor (Hard) where it stance dances and changes the effects of its white magics. In one stance Regen is a healing bubble on itself, in the other it's a bleed-causing AoE attack. I don't know how they'd work that with Cleric Stance, or how they'd differentiate, but I feel that would fit in with the idea of a Red Mage dealing damage and healing pretty well.

Crumbs, Met. Whenever you post about the game I realise I've got a *long* way to go in building up my knowledge about it!

It's a nice touch that a free software upgrade is being offered for PS3 to PS4. I have always been impressed with the game's tech anyway, so it'll be interesting to see what happens now that PS4 becomes the base.

And since it's here and I don't have to go bumping it myself: reminder than Tokyo fanfest is kicking off this coming Friday where we should get another infodump about Stormblood including Red Mage confirmation and how they actually work. As well as a teaser for another new class.

*steps in*

I now play on Balmung server as Syvin Byrfhis (and also transferred Zu Dzigo from Cerberus to the same server, and will be doing same with another alt plus 4 more alts) and I'm enjoying it lot more since there's more than just PvE stuff for me. Plus Roegadyn heaven.

Still got Aisbraena Enn on Cerberus, though. Mainly because my boyfriend plays on that server, and I also got home there I ain't giving up.

There's also talk of Yoshi's tshirt being a reference to Samurai.

For context he came out in a Spider-man top. Unlike Batman > Dark Knight and Scarlet Witch > Red Mage nobody really knows for sure. There are some leaps in logic akin to his James Bond > Machinist top last time, but the general theory is Sam Raimi directed the films and, in Japanese, his name is pronounced and written as Samu-raimi.

Alternatively, he got his powers after being attacked and copying abilities so Blue Mage confirmed.

Ahoy there! I've recently moved to Exodus, as that's where a few friends are playing. That means I've moved to the Primal Data Center, and the latest patch seems to mention something about cross-world parties which could be useful.

I thought I'd check in and see if anyone else was on Primal / Exodus?

Sadly (even though this reply is super late) many of us are on Cerberus / Chaos data center.

Not me though, I've moved to Balmung which is on Aether data center as it's good for roleplay and I happen to roleplay in this game too.

Just taking time off from it though, since I've burnt out getting Scholar on Syvin Byrfhis (my new main) to 60 and wanted to play other games.

They just formally announced Samurai.

It's a strawberry floating DPS. Looks like a slower monk with different stances or something.

Queue times for DPS are already nuts, with this and RDM it's going to be unbearable. Gonna put off levelling Red until queues balance out, probably.

Honestly I'm happy with it being DPS. Sick of having a sword job that's not DPS ._.
