The tank is the leader for the dungeons and other group activities with other players. You’d need to really know what you’re doing.

After that chat a few months back, I am now gonna have another go at playing FF XIV on my PS4. I'll be starting out as a fresh character. Previously I tried being a "DPS" ("Thaumaturge") character and I struggled to get into it. Looking online, it seems that "Tank" ("Gladiator") might be a good role for a new player to try? I think this means trying to attract aggro from enemies?

Do any of you guys think that Gladiator could be a decent role for a (total) noob to try?

I'd say you might be better off avoiding tanking given what you've said about how you find Dungeon content before. If you don't like the pressure of instanced group dungeons as a DPS, you'll hate it as a tank. Tanks dictate the pace of Dungeon runs, by controlling the volume of pulls. Pull too many and, unless you've got an amazing healer with you, you're heading for a wipe. Pull too few, and you risk frustrating your party mates by going too slowly, especially if they're rerunning old content while you're still leveling.

There's plenty of other DPS options for you that'll give you a change from black mage, one of the melee DPS, or potentially a ranged non magic DPS like archer/bard.

Thanks, guys! Oh dear, yeah, it sounds like Tank might not be ideal for a new player!

Perhaps I'll take another go at Thaumaturge (Black Mage). It's not so much that I want to change, more that I was rubbish before and so I'll need to pay a bit more attention to the controls and training.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, jiggles and Knoyleo!

White Mage is an easy class to pick up.

You've got everything you need for solo stuff, then the dungeons are basically just making sure you keep the party in good shape with healing and buffs (Tank being the priority). I don't think I've ever had to wait to play a dungeon as one either.

Ta, Dev!

I'm having a good think about returning to this. I kinda think that I'll do as I did twice before; make some slow progress, start enjoying it it... and then get a bit frustrated once I reach dungeons and the multiplayer stuff.

Gonna have a timeout before signing up.

Duty support looks like it's been rolled out for almost all MSQ instances except Stormblood, so if you're still set on not doing multiplayer dungeons, NPC companions are available to you.

As of Patch 6.3, instanced duties for A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Shadowbringers, and Endwalker are supported. Duty Support for Stormblood (4.x) will be added in patch 6.4 and patch 6.5. Newly-released main scenario dungeons have Duty Support available on release.

Ah! I'd heard something about this but hadn't realised it was live. Thanks, Knoyleo.

I don't mind multiplayer stuff, really, but I don't want to let other players down through my bad play. Will sleep on it tonight.

The non-magic DPS classes are the easiest to get to grips with I think. Every time I try a mage class I always feel weird about having to stand still to cast. Lancer/Dragoon is what I use because it’s very mobile and every ability is instant, so all you’re doing is avoiding the AoE markers on the ground and running through your combos.

I'm hoping that I'll at least be okay at the standing still moments!

He got me resubbing last night. :fp:

Main game is on sale on Steam this weekend as well as the most recent expansion, so I picked that up too.

I also installed it on my Steam Deck and it's flawless there. Needs some tweaks to the controller settings to make it a bit simpler to play, but it's absolutely viable.

I haven't subbed yet - got a lousy cold and don't feel like concentrating right now - but will hopefully do so tomorrow!

Ooh! Incredible timing - thanks for the heads-up, Knoyleo! I will be playing on PlayStation but I *think* the free login is still valid.

I watched a few more "what class to choose" vids last night and I'm getting more and more confused. They all seem to be pretty complicated. I think I'm gonna create my character as an arcanist/summoner because some folk seem to think it's okay for a noob.

Edit: The free login period is only for four days from when you first login... but, hey, still pretty neat.

No! I think I meant Archer!

Strawbin' heck, choosing a class when you don't really know anything about them is literally becoming a bit stressful  :fp: .

Edit: Oops... Bard to start, which can then become Archer.

No, you were right the first time. Start as archer in Gridania, level up to bard at 30. The class/job system can be a bit confusing, but y'know, 1.0 spaghetti hold over.

It's been a while since I've played pretty much anything at low level, and even fewer things in their current iteration, but from what I can remember and still believe is the case is that archer is easier than arcanist. But when you start getting more job skills bard becomes more complicated than summoner since their abilities are kind of all independent of each other and based on random procs.

Summoner recently got a very substantial rework and now has one cast a minute so almost full mobility. They work by going into certain phases where you're pretty much locked into 2 or 3 options. It's only at high end that it matters which order you do your summons in, but in general the rotation kind of leads itself.

You could start running archer then swap to arcanist later. It will take a little bit of grinding back up after the swap, but it shouldn't be too bad with the Hall of the Novice ring, some boiled eggs, and the like.

Ah! Thanks, Met; Archer it shall be, then! For race, I'm gonna go for Lalafell.

If I'm anything like before, I'll be playing for a long period before I reach level 30  . Just gonna take my time and enjoy soaking up the atmosphere as I travel around :toot: .

I'm back in Eorzea!

I did go for Archer and I hadn't realised that this meant that I'd be starting in Gridania, so that makes a change from my old Black Mage Ul'dah days!

Spent twenty minutes trying to find the Moogle mailbox in Gridania; looked online and realised that it's in the Old Gridania section   .
