Kind of disappointed that after XV had quite a few costume options they've been completely removed again in this.
I know costume options are generally non-existent in Final Fantasy games historically, but they've become such a staple of games, RPGs in particular, recently that it's disappointing they're totally absent here.

Then again they'd probably all be paid for DLC anyway so maybe it's for the best.

Yeah I definitely prefer Clive's first (adult) outfit. The one he gets later makes him look like a Protagonist from the Castlevania anime or something

Made it to the second crystal over the weekend. Really enjoying it so far. The story doesn't really push the boat out, but so far it's a solid execution. It certainly helps that this is the best Cid in the series.

Combat scratches that DMC itch. It's missing a layer that DMC has by virtue of not being a specialised game, but it still takes the most fun parts of being Nero and giving him Dante's style switching.

My only gripe so far is that it wasn't clear how upgrading skills changed some of them. Like Heatwave going from 1 wave, and 2 on counter to 2 and 4 is clear, but things like Magic Burst I can't tell if it's just more damage, a bigger hitbox, or a wider window since I started landing it way more consistently after the upgrade, but that is very likely just me getting better.

If you press triangle on the ability screen it tells you what each upgrade and mastery does.

The way this game does the "slow fade out to black and then the camera pans down from the sky" to show that Clive told another character something is so painfully slow and repetitive.

It's such a horrible stock looking camera pan too. Every time it happens I roll my eyes

The 5 year timeskip seems so totally unnecessary, especially given that the characters accomplish absolutely nothing in that time. The narrative could have remained exactly the same with just a 6 month skip.

I mean. Quite a lot happens to be fair

They find a new base, have to outfit it, aquire new people. You'd figure at least a year or two of that would be them getting back in their feet properly.

Plus I figured every single kingdom with a mother crystal would be on incredibly high alert after what they did, meaning they probably had to lay low for quite a while anyway.

So they kept the big chickens and the mole bats in the dark and gritty game? That is funny

I don’t know why they would remove them. It’s an extremely Final Fantasy game, once it moves beyond the Game of Thrones facsimile of the prologue (but even that has Chocobos, albeit getting brained and beheaded). There is swearing and some more adult scenarios but it’s not like it’s Clive Barker’s Final Fantasy or some gooseberry fool.

I just think any game trying to be taken seriously may get undermined by the giant chickens

The game opens with a giant phoenix and a demon fighting as they fall miles into an underground cavern, but it's the ostrich that's silly.

Got to play with the 4th Eikon power tonight and it's a lot of fun. Decided to replace the 3rd because while the set up play was fun when it worked it was more hassle than it was worth when I could just Big Number. Once I start mastering skills I might bring one back, but for now I'm happy running Phoenix/Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan. The classic UwU squad.

We’re around the same place, though I ditched #2. The Titan aspect is the best of the circle abilities. Hands down

I was thinking of dropping that one since the R2 abilities are either just replaced by Titan (like the counter), not overly useful (the AoE one since there are plenty of options to launch enemies), or just there to be there (the flurry attack).

But decided to keep it because hot damn, I love having Nero's Devil Bringer.

Thinking about it now I can see reason to drop Phoenix since the circle dash is mostly made up for by just having Lunge natively. Though, I do like the projectile counter.

I have a build right now build around fast hits.

I won't spoil late game Eikons but the lightning rod ability works INCREDIBLY well with Titan's counter since it hits so many times so fast.

And there's another ability that does DOT with these orbs and they also trigger the lightbung rod.

I don't have any of the super move abilities but I still managed to get the 45k stagger damage, it's really fun setting everything up.
