Shaun White has apologised for dragging the American flag and accidentally stepping on it in the aftermath of his halfpipe gold medal win on Wednesday.

White, 31, became the first snowboarder to win three Olympic titles, securing a 100th all-time Winter Games gold for the United States.

But his treatment of the flag was met with an angry reaction online.

"I definitely didn't mean any disrespect, the flag flying on my house right now is way up there," he said.

"So sorry for that, but I'm definitely very proud to be part of Team USA and be an American and to be representing everyone back home."

The US Code for respecting the flag says it "should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise".

It also states the flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, used as wearing apparel or bedding, and never used as part of a costume or athletic uniform.

I love a good flag, and have often taken pleasure in being able to name some of the more obscure ones (generally due to playing World Cup qualifying videogames as a child, I think).

However, I dislike the English and British flags very much. They're just symbols of Christianity, which I don't believe reflects our nation one iota. Saint George himself was a Greek/Turkish/Palestine solider who probably didn't exist and even if he did, certainly didn't do half the stuff he's famous for - and absolutely never stepped foot in England.

Though it's rare, I do like it when potential future flags are debated (because of Scotland / Northern Ireland potentially leaving the Union) as it's very interesting to see what it might be like and what people would like. Though most suggestions retain the St George cross which is annoying. Another option is to ditch the crucifixes altogether and go for the Tudor Rose, but as a republican (British version not American!) I wouldn't want a monarchical heraldic symbol to represent us all, so... yeah.

Less talk Daniel, draw and post up your ideal version of the British/English flag.

What about that Union Flag redesign that won the vote on the Daily Telgraph website?

I'm not a huge fan of our flag, but I do like the Nordic ones. So all we need is a jaunty off-centre cross

Having to recite certain lines every morning from a young age (even if only through soft pressure) is pretty much the literal definition of brainwashing.

I don't think it's a stretch to say the jingoism which can arise from unthinking loyalty to a country at an early age is in part responsible for the US taking a disproportionately meddling role in other countries' foreign affairs.

One of the proposed new flags for New Zealand would have been the greatest flag of all time, but Mannyland didn't go for it.

That’s the strawberry floating Offspring logo

Flags seem like a construct of nationalism, a concept which I find weird.

The Union Jack has become symbolic of Rangers up here, because of the regularity with which it is waved about at Ibrox - similarly the Irish Tricolour is used by Celtic supporters. I don’t like the use of either.

Why should Australia get to vote on New Zealand's flag

It’s very frustrating - the flag isn’t removable, and keeps reverting to the St George Cross and I don’t know why. It’s as if it knows I’m not truly Scottish. :slol:

Union Jacks can be found fluttering all over the place in Central London, from the souvenir shops to the tops of landmarks, they're everywhere, and we're not alone in the flag waving department here.

The French display their tricolor everywhere, the Germans do the same with their flag (there's a big one in Boppard that you can see for miles), Belgium even add three flags to a lot of their buildings (national/regional/EU), it's actually kinda neat.

I actually really love the union flag design. It's just a shame that it tends to be hijacked by racist scumbags.

I tend to dress in the "Mod" style, which means the flag is displayed in a lot of the things I wear. But I always feel a bit self-conscious that people may think I'm one of those people who are doing it out of pure hatred for those of different backgrounds.

I try to own it, and like to throw in some patches of other cool flags on my parka.

The union jack does have a striking design. There was a bit of a debate before the Scotland Independence referendum about what the flag would look like in the event of a Yes vote.

I would like to see more Welsh representation on the flag, but there isn't an easy way to do that without making it too busy, like this:

This is a proposed design with the St David's Cross on it.
