I don't think I have a favourite flag (oh alright it's South Africa, lovely design) but I can say with absolute certainty that I detest the English flag of St George. It's been totally hijacked by racist chavs in white vans and council houses that hang them out of their windows for some reason.

I don't mind the Union Jack, but it's stained by the blood of the Empire period so it's not something I feel particularly patriotic about.

In terms of flags I've always been quite partial to the Isle of Man variant.

I have less of an issue when it's done during a World Cup or Euros, although again I'd question the need to do it, the players can't see your support. It's when you see them year-round and not connected to a sporting event (surely the only thing that actually gets this country to share a common goal) that I dislike. It's almost sinister.

I kinda get your thinking, Preezy, in so far as some ignorant, racist people did/do take to flying the English flag as a symbol of their own twisted perspectives. But why do you detest the flag itself rather than those ignorant beliefs? Why not fly it as a symbol of the more welcoming ideals that other folk have? It feels like it'd be a shame to allow a group of thugs to hold sway over a powerful symbol; of any country, not just England.

A flag by itself doesn’t show welcoming ideas though. To somebody looking at it on a house, all they see is what they think it represents. Is the average person from an ethnic minority or an immigrant looking at Preezy’s house and thinking “Oh, there is a guy that has welcoming ideas!” or are they thinking “Oh, there is a guy that loves his country just a bit too much”?

I wouldn’t say I detest the English/British flag, but I completely understand why people do not want to fly it. It just seems utterly pointless to me to want a flag outside or on your house.
