The only royal who was ever worth anything died being chased by the press, if only big ears Charles was interesting enough to chase , get rid of the lot of them that's what I say.

Oh and if we need something Welsh on the flag let's have the dragon as dragons are awesome.

I think some of us are proud of the country, as in our past, out culture things like authors etc we are just fed up of royals , the bloody over paid under talented governments we have had, the rising gap between the struggling and the stupidly rich...but more than anything the idiots who are overly proud of this country seeing us as an empire still and thinking we are the center of the world and other countries are inferior etc.

Bigots? The only bigotry around my way is the giant conifers just outside of town, i've never seen bigger trees than those.

I've always found the Japanese prefecture flags quite cool.

Also I'm not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but this Ted talk about how US city flags are terrible and the five basic rules of flag designing is very interesting and well worth a listen.

Just a question, do kids in the UK have to sing the national anthem each morning? We have to do it here, and you have to pledge allegiance to the Queen when you become a citizen (although that's a one time thing), so I don't really see the American thing as that bad personally.

Just for comparison the Canadian Pledge is:

"I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, her heirs and successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada including treaties with Indigenous Peoples, and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen."

We have the same sort of thing for people wishing to become British citizens, it’s the oath of allegiance

I swear by Almighty God that, on becoming a British citizen, I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her Heirs and Successors according to law.

You all really need to learn the national anthem! (I left out verse six)

[Verse 1:]
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen!

[Verse 2:]
O lord God arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall!
Confound their knavish tricks,
Confuse their politics,
On you our hopes we fix,
God save the Queen!

[Verse 3:]
Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world ov'er

[Verse 4:]
From every latent foe,
From the assasins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

[Verse 5:]
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign!
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

Yeah, for sure. They're probably the best set of sub-national flags in the world.

By stark contrast, Liberia has these county flags:

These are just indefensible. Are those trees floating in the sky in that last one?

You might be on to something. River Gee County (floaty sky trees) was only created in 2000.

That one is the most Paint-like.

Also, those Japanese prefecture ones are cool.

Yup. Here's the sixth verse:

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

My old music teacher hated the national anthem. He said it sounded like a funereal dirge. Come to think of it, Bill Bailey did too.

Don’t you think that a national anthem that causes genuine offence to 1/4 of the countries in the Union is a ducking stupid national anthem?

Imagine if you were forced to sing all six verses as a Scot, singing about your own death to an unbearably dull tune that we still have to share with Liechtenstein.

I sang “Oben am jungen Rhein” at a dinner party when I was over there with a friend

It offends 1/4 and bores the gooseberry fool out of the other 3/4.

To be fair, it’s only the rebellious Scots that Lizzie will crush.
