(Freshly imported from SONM)

I find flags fascinating. They can be used by countries, cities, businesses, even individual people can have their own flags. Queen Elizabeth II has like ten.

One of my favourite flags is that of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Image

The flag of Dominica is the only country flag that has the colour purple on it (unless you count the rainbow on the flag of Nicaragua, but rainbows don't have purple in them), here representing the distinctive feathers of the Sisserou parrot native to the island, its national bird. The ten stars represent the ten parishes of Dominica.

What are some of your favourite flags?

I have always been fascinated and interested in flags, when i was a child i had a book called "every boys handbook" and in it, it had all the flags of the world, i was especially interested in all the old empire countries and current commonwealth nations as they all had the union flag on them, id get my parents and friends to test me on them, my interest then moved to atlases and other book to learn more about these places and the history

Flag can be and still are very powerful symbols and revoke emotions and feelings to people, there has been a lot in the news about the Confederate flag in America due to racial tensions, i had no idea that government buildings in the south still fly that flag when its a historical flag and not a current one,

What flags do you love and what do they mean to you ? or what flags to you find offensive ?, my favourite flags are

1) Union Flag (obviously)

Image

its a flag that means everything to me, seeing the flag flying fills me with happiness and pride, going to London and walking down the mall literally brings me to tears, my hairs stand on end, i get goose pimples, for me it symbolises everything that is great about this country, it makes me think of history and all the brave men and women that have made this country what it is, it gives me a sense of purpose, a sense of belonging, i could go on but you get the picture !!

2) Royal Standard

Image

like the Union Flag its part of our British identity which the royal family are central to, like the Union Flag i get great pride from this flag

3) Flag of Nottinghamshire

Image

im very proud of being from Nottinghamshire, its a county that i feel gets over looked but its truly beautiful and full of history

4) Bavarian State Flag

Image

a place that for me is my second home, never have i felt so welcome in a "foreign" place, im sure i must have a bit of Bavarian in me as i have been to many countries and parts of the world but as soon as i arrived there for the first time i felt like i was at home and around friends, its really hard to explain !

I always liked the Cornish flag, but mainly because it reminds me of being on holiday.

Image

Of course, being half French, I also have a soft spot for my other national flag too;

I would never be so childish as to post a white flag of surrender as to do so would be to disrespect hundreds of years of spectacular french military prowess that probably happened.

Well the Welsh flag is the best.

It has a dragon on it.

Flags are grand until someone takes great pride in one wants to have a fight over it, then theyre stupid.

The old Libyan flag was pretty great.

No strawberry floating around there, its green, get on with it.

I also like when flags are basically the same but tweaked slighty, example:

Ireland

Ivory Coast

I'm no military genius but I think that an AK47 beats a machete.

Only if the AK47 has bullets in it

Not if the AK47 has ran out of ammo.

I'm no military genius but even I would supply ammo to my troops before they invaded macheteland.

But what if macheteland has lots of jungle vines? Your AK soldiers will be very ill equipped. Have you properly scouted the battlefield?

Mozambique isn't a wealthy country though, there's probably no money available for ammo.
