Tottenham Hotspur fans to continue using 'yid' chant

Spurs fans have vowed to carry on chanting the word "yid" despite risking arrest when they do, a supporters group says.

Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust (THST) were told fans could be arrested if a formal complaint was made.

The Met told them there was a clear difference between songs about gas chambers directed at Spurs fans and their own supporters using the word.

The word means Jew in Yiddish and is not deemed offensive in itself.

Chants of "Yids", "Yid Army" and "Yiddos" are regularly heard in the home stands at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham have a strong Jewish following and have been on the receiving end of anti-Semitic abuse from opposition fans

'Badge of honour'
Last season, eight people were arrested at the north London club for racially aggravated offences; three of which were for using the term yid.

THST secretary Katrina Law said last season fans were told that they would be arrested just for using the word, whereas now the position seems to be that there has to be a formal complaint.

"Now hopefully Spurs fans can still support their team and use the word," she said.

"We do not believe that any Spurs fan is using the term in a malicious way. We are using it as a badge of honour and as a call to arms.

"We recognise that the term can cause offence to the Jewish community and we are mindful of that.

"Our position, as always, is that we should not be arrested for using that term."

The Football Association has warned supporters that use of such words could result in a banning order or even criminal prosecution.

People find "yid" offensive so stop using it, don't cling on out of stubbornness. It's not like anyone wants to change the club name or logo, it's just a dumb thing that shouldn't happen any more.

Continuing the Spurs news day theme

Sir Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey have left.

Always sad when this happens, les has been a striker coach at spurs since 2008. Whenever people step up from lower roles to assistant new managers and then they leave it always ends up with them losing their job as well as they never seem to be able to go back to their former roles.

Groups of people find various uses of words and terms offensive. Do we have to stop using all these words?

Be careful with your answer as you may offend someone.

Personally I don't shout yid army or anything similar. I never have. But I don't have a problem with others doing it. It was adopted initially by Jewish supporters of spurs when opposition fans started using it in a derogative manner. It then started being used by non Jewish spurs supporters as a form of identity and has spread.

The meaning and use of words do change over time. I have never heard the word yid used in an offensive manner towards Jewish people and I don't believe it to be an issue in the community.

Wouldn't mind a "cheeky" bid for Gary Medel.

Well as long as you have never been offended or heard it used offensively then I guess it is ok.

I like him. Not for starting every game but as backup.

We already have enough dross never mind adding to it. Van Gaal has to find buyers for Young, Anderson, Cleverley, Fellaini and Buttner. Fletcher also will never be the same. So our summer signings shouldn't be back ups. We should be signing players who'd get in our starting eleven and that for me is about four to five players.

Obviously all those players I listed won't go. I can see Fellaini staying as nobody would be silly enough to pay £15m and his wages.

Medel didn't even stand out for Cardiff. Chile had a forest defender and another player whose team were relegated. But I don't think most these players can transform this level to their club. Even Sanchez has had problems at Barca.

Barca have signed Claudio Bravo (the Chilean keeper) for €12m. Surprised they've paid that much for a backup keeper, but I suppose they do have silly amounts of money compared to the other Spanish teams. He's great, hope he does well.

Wouldn't class him as backup just yet.

Still not convinced about Ter Stegen. Saw him a few times and always looked like making a mistake.

He's not dross, and I'd play him in midfield rather than defence. He's better than most of the midfielders currently at the club.

Whatever problems Sanchez had at Barca, he scored 19 league goals last season.
