Ex-footballers as pundits are a real mixed bag and I'm not sure why. Why is it that any idiot can get paid to do it? Surely you should have to be good at it? There are plenty of good ones like Gary Neville (not Phil, he's one of the worst), Carragher, Souness to be fair. Just need to weed out the shite.

It must be difficult feeling like you're on the spot and I'm sure they would rather say pointless gooseberry fool than risk something that turns out to be completely wrong/stupid.

But still. Someone needs to just be honest with him in this situation and tell him if he says anything as severely banal as that again he won't be invited back on. It feels as though they pander to B/C list players because for some reason the prestige of having a famous name is more valuable than having someone who is actually interesting to listen to.
