Saw Cyrille Regis at Old Trafford. Playing for West Brom.

Shame that. RIP Mate.

Yeah I can’t imagine it’s a very tempting job at the moment for anybody already in a job.

This is all part of managed decline, the owners know the club won't be self sufficient in the Premier League and are preparing for next season's Championship campaign.

Sanchez must be on his way to United in that case.

BREAKING NEWS

We understand Manchester City have ended their interest in signing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal because the cost of the deal has become too expensive.

Haha imagine if Sanchez ends up stuck at the arse after all this. He’d get the right arsehole over that and therefore I hope he does stay.

Would be even more hilarious if Chelsea got involved just to add to the Mourinho vs. Conte thing.

Cyrille Regis, former West Brom and England striker, dies aged 59

• Regis was a pioneer for black footballers in the late 1970s
• The striker was capped five times for England

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... es-aged-59

Not enough comments on here re Cyrille Regis. Too many youngsters who don’t know anything about football pre 1992

I grew up in the West Midlands in the 70s and remember the WBA team of the late 70s with Regis, Cunningham and Batson. Cyrille Regis had one of the hardest shots I remember from my childhood but he was such an explosive powerful player who excited the crowd. I never got to see him live unfortunately, and of course back then you didn’t get to see many live TV games but his talent was there for all to see in the brief highlights.

How he kept smiling through the years of, let’s face it, dogs abuse from the opposing fans for being black amazes me. The racism in the 70s was unbelievable compared to nowadays but Regis, together with Cunningham, Batson and also Viv Anderson at my team Forest, all battled against it and helped pave the way for other black players to play in the old First Division.

Regis was a gent off the pitch and I remember regularly seeing him, Cunningham and Batson on Midlands Today being interviewed. They even were presented alongside the Three Degrees singers (how racist that seems now?) on occasion.

59 is no age. RIP ‘Big C’. Lovely tribute from his nephew Jason Roberts on the BBC tonight too.

The fact that "The Three Degrees" was their acceptable nickname shows what a terrible time they must have had. I'm way too young to remember Cyrille Regis playing but I was aware of how important his era of black players were. How upset Dion Dublin seemed on the news showed what a nice bloke he must have been. RIP.

Good win tonight. Weird to see Valencia actually scoring with his left foot for the first time ever and Pogba was immense, joint top for assists in the league with De Bruyne and he's played 10 less games.

Gutted to hear of Cyrille Regis’ passing today, absolute legend of the game. I don’t remember his WBA days but his Coventry days stick in the mind.

Shame he didn’t get more England caps.

Building on the Cyrille Regis theme, I agree with KingK about racism being far more apparent at football in the 70s and 80s than (thankfully) it is today. I started going to see Arsenal in 1981 and the team had a number of black guys in the squad. The fans seemed - to me, anyway - to be very accepting of this; it was nothing odd (as, of course, it shouldn't be) and I don't recall hearing any racist abuse in the crowd. All the fans got behind the team regardless of who was playing.

However, I do remember one time that we played Watford and they had the brilliant young John Barnes playing for them. I was standing with my mate on the North Bank terracing and two Arsenal supporters were giving him racist abuse; disgusting stuff that was unusual to hear at Arsenal and we were shocked by it. They were two big guys and, whilst other supporters were moving away from them and giving them looks, they carried on regardless. Anyhow, the game ended and immediately two black chaps approached them and "challenged" their behaviour... within seconds a bust-up ensued and the two racist thugs took an absolute pasting. As a young teenager I found it scary and shocking but it felt like the thugs had got what they deserved. I don't know if it was "right" but it felt like justice.

It's terrible to hear about some of the stuff that black players had to face whilst simply playing the game. Guys like Cyrille Regis helped to make people think about their behaviour. There is still some way to go but Cyrille and other players had the skill and determination to go out onto the pitch and change minds. What a remarkable legacy.

Nice story. Sounds like they fully deserved it.
